Mathieu played for the Chiefs from 2019 to 2021, but his connection with the franchise remains as strong as ever. He attended one of the Chiefs’ games last season, where he had the honor of beating the ceremonial drum and leading the crowd’s signature chant.
Mathieu is known for bringing energy to Chiefs Kingdom, and the “Honey Badger” did it again by attending Kansas City’s training camp on Tuesday as a volunteer coach.
His appearance quickly caught fans’ attention after the Chiefs’ official social media account shared a photo of him on the practice field.
“Out there looking like a coach,” a fan said.

The Chiefs made a major investment in Mathieu when they signed him to a three-year, $42 million contract in free agency during the 2019 offseason, and he lived up to every expectation.

Mathieu spent three seasons in Kansas City, earning two Pro Bowl selections and two All-Pro nods. He became a big part of the defense and played a big role in helping the Chiefs win Super Bowl LIV during the 2019 season.
Besides his play on the field, he became one of the team’s most respected leaders, providing guidance and setting the tone in the locker room through both successes and challenges.
Mathieu quickly became the emotional leader the players rallied around before games, but his tenure ended after the 2021 season.
He expressed a desire to remain in Kansas City, but the franchise chose to move in a different direction. He has since retired from the NFL, and now he seems to be pursuing a coaching gig.

Mathieu also shared his own thoughts after attending practice, saying the team still carries a “championship swagger.”
