Who is Pete Golding? All About Next Ole Miss Head Coach After Lane Kiffin

In a stunning twist to the coaching carousel, Lane Kiffin officially departed Ole Miss to take the head coaching job at LSU, just days before the Rebels prepare for the College Football Playoff. Ole Miss wasted no time responding. Vice Chancellor for Intercollegiate Athletics Keith Carter immediately turned to continuity, naming defensive coordinator Pete Golding as the program’s 40th head coach.

The move signals urgency in the moment but also confidence in the man now tasked with leading one of the nation’s hottest programs. So who is Pete Golding, and why did Ole Miss elevate him into the biggest role of his career?

    Who is Pete Golding?

Since arriving in Oxford in 2023, Golding has reshaped Ole Miss’s defensive identity. His units delivered several of the most dominant defensive performances in modern program history, including a school-record pass rush in 2024. Across two seasons, he mentored eight NFL Draft picks, turning Ole Miss defenders into high-end, pro-ready athletes.

According to PFSN, Ole Miss earned an 82.4 defensive impact grade (34th nationally) in 2025, one of the biggest reasons the Rebels finished the regular season 11-1 and held a 100% projected chance to reach the College Football Playoff. Golding’s defense allowed an average of 20.08 points per game, the 25th fewest in the nation, and 182.6 passing yards per game, the 20th fewest nationally.

Elite against the pass, steadily improving against the run, and extraordinarily disruptive, Golding built a defensive backbone that complemented Kiffin’s explosive offense. Now, that backbone becomes the foundation of the entire program.

Before his success at Ole Miss, Golding spent five seasons as Nick Saban’s defensive coordinator at Alabama (2018-22), helping engineer one of the most dominant stretches of modern SEC football. During his tenure with the Crimson Tide, he guided the program to three SEC championships (2018, 2020, 2021), a national championship in 2020, multiple top-10 defensive rankings, and the development of numerous first-round NFL Draft picks.

Few coaches in the country currently possess a more authentic Saban-influenced résumé. Golding’s nearly two decades of experience also include stops at UTSA, Southern Miss, Southeastern Louisiana, and Delta State, where he played his college football.

    A High-Pressure, High-Upside Move for Ole Miss

Naming Golding the head coach brings both stability and risk.

On one hand, continuity is essential. The Rebels are preparing for the College Football Playoff, and promoting from within helps avoid disruption to team chemistry, game-planning, and recruiting momentum. It keeps players, staff, and systems aligned during the most important stretch in program history.

On the other hand, this is Golding’s first head coaching job, and Ole Miss is in the national spotlight at the highest possible moment. The Rebels did not conduct a long external search, meaning they are betting big on Golding’s ability to transition from coordinator to program CEO on the fly. But the upside? Potentially massive.

Golding’s pedigree, defensive expertise, recruiting success, and deep SEC experience prepare him more than many first-time head coaches. And with the Rebels on the doorstep of the playoffs, he steps into a rare opportunity to prove himself immediately.

With the Rebels virtually locked into the College Football Playoff field, Golding is set to guide Ole Miss into the postseason without Lane Kiffin — a monumental responsibility and an equally monumental opportunity.

Ole Miss hired Pete Golding to bring stability now, but they also see something bigger: the chance for a rising coaching talent to elevate the program even higher.

The spotlight is on him. The Rebels are in position. And the College Football Playoff awaits. It’s Pete Golding’s time to shine.
