Heading into his second year, UNC Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick is under intense scrutiny. After taking over the reins in December 2024, he was expected to transform the program to unprecedented levels, something similar to how he built the Patriots dynasty. However, his first season with the program went terribly, and he now finds himself atop the hot-seat coaches list for 2026.
According to analyst Colin Cowherd, the UNC coach appears to be in an uncomfortable situation. But that really doesn’t matter.
Complacency Could Be Creeping In on Bill Belichick
While speaking on his show, “The Herd With Colin Cowherd,” the veteran analyst took a deep dive into the coaching landscape of college football. Belichick’s name came up at the top, which was natural given his poor 4-8 record last season, finally ending the program’s six-year streak of making a postseason bowl game. Cowherd claims Belichick has nothing to prove and enjoys having “friends and family staff in North Carolina.”
“My takeaway is, when you’ve been so iconic, so great, your legacy is set in stone. It really doesn’t matter how it ends,” Cowherd said on Monday’s episode of his show.
“He’s now only working with people he wants to work with. It’s a lot of comfort. There’s no discomfort. You know, I think it’s okay to have somebody on your staff that you know is a challenge. I think sometimes you need players on your team that are a challenge. Bill doesn’t want that anymore,” Cowherd explained about the dynamics at UNC.
The analyst also took a swipe at the veteran coach’s off-field issues, especially with his girlfriend, Jordon Hudson, catching the spotlight for all the wrong reasons and Belichick enjoying his post-NFL career.
“He’s got his boat, got his girlfriend, and sometimes when you get to be older, the first number on your age is six or seven…. It’s something. I mean, your legacy is set in stone,” Cowherd added.

The offseason has been equally troubling for the program, with human resources investigations surrounding GM Michael Lombardi and concerns around his hiring process. Moreover, Belichick’s son Steve, who also happens to be the defensive coordinator, taking indefinite medical leave brought immense attention to the program.
After a struggling season, last year’s starting quarterback, Gio Lopez, transferred to Wake Forest. Belichick overhauled the QB room via the transfer portal before hiring Bobby Petrino, who replaced fired offensive coordinator Freddie Kitchens, to run the offense.
The program is yet to name a starting quarterback for the season, although veteran transfer from Wisconsin Billy Edwards Jr. is expected to start for the team.
Well, Belichick has a lot to prove. All eight of his Super Bowl rings, six as a head coach, two as a Giants defensive coordinator, and his other NFL accolades. After a slump, UNC will be looking to have a winning season in 2026.
