‘That Was Lane Kiffin’s Team’: NFL Legend’s Brutally Honest Advice for Trinidad Chambliss

NFL legend Dez Bryant recently shared some brutally honest advice for Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss after rejecting Lane Kiffin.

Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss threw for over 270 yards and a touchdown during the Rebels’ Fiesta Bowl game against Miami last night. However, it wasn’t enough as Pete Golding’s team fell to a standout performance from Fiesta Bowl MVP Carson Beck.

Following last night’s loss, despite apparent interest from the NFL, Chambliss is preparing to return to Ole Miss for his final season. This is pending the outcome of an ongoing case with the NCAA regarding a potential waiver for an additional year of eligibility.

NFL legend Weighs In on Trinidad Chambliss’ NFL Decision

Following last night’s loss to Miami, former Cowboys WR Dez Bryant had a message for the Ole Miss quarterback. Bryant was ruled ineligible for the 2009 season after failing to disclose an interaction with current Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders.

“I’m all in on college players staying in college as long as possible because of NIL..but whenever you’re in a situation like his. It’s a no-brainer for him (Trinidad Chambliss) to leave…That was Lane Kiffin’s team…and you don’t know what next year might look like. I wouldn’t take the chance to find out. I don’t disagree with this,” Bryant said.

Following his performance last week, ESPN’s Peter Schrager described Chambliss as a potential day three pick. According to PFSN’s latest mock draft, there are three quarterbacks with a first-round grade. This includes Fernando Mendoza, Dante Moore, and Ty Simpson.

In comparison, the 2027 NFL draft class is shaping up to be one of the best in recent years. The class of 2027 includes the likes of Ohio State’s Jeremiah Smith and Julian Sayin, Texas’s Arch Manning, and edge rusher Colin Simmons, among many others.

Despite that, Chambliss decided to return to Ole Miss for another season. Additionally, this came after apparent interest from his former coach, Lane Kiffin, who, according to reports, was willing to offer above 4$ million for the former D2 quarterback.

“I will tell you, what I have said on the record here, is that LSU’s offer for Trinidad Chambliss, provided he gets his extra year, is approaching 4$ million. As I’ve been told, and I’m very comfortable saying that,” revealed LSU insider Matt Moscona.

“It was a little bit of a hard decision because Coach (Charlie) Weis was always good to me. I had a great relationship with him throughout the whole season. As well as Coach (Lane) Kiffin, he’s been nothing but good to me.” Chambliss admitted.

Weis Jr. was a key part of Ole Miss’ offense’s playcalling this season, which ranked 13th nationally in total offense per the PFN College Football OFFi, averaging 309.6 passing yards per game, and 11th in scoring with 37.3 points per game.

“But I just felt like Ole Miss was home, and I felt like it was the right thing to do, and I felt comfortable being here. Oxford community has been nothing but good to me and my family.” The quarterback revealed the reasoning behind his decision.

Currently, the quarterback is embroiled in a battle with the NCAA over securing an additional year of eligibility. The Ole Miss quarterback was trying to request a medical redshirt for the 2022 season at Ferris State. That year, he dealt with persistent respiratory issues. No decision has been made at this time.

After throwing for 282 yards and a touchdown during Ole Miss’s playoff game against Tulane, according to PFSN’s QB impact rankings, Trinidad Chambliss ranks fifth nationally in quarterback play. With an impact score of 90.3, the Rebels’ quarterback threw for over 3000 yards and 21 touchdowns in 2025.

After managing to secure the return of his starting quarterback, Golding has also managed to convince star running back Kewan Lacy to return to Ole Miss. With two of their offensive superstars returning, the Rebels will look to make a return to the CFP playoffs next year.
