Where Do BYU and Texas Tech Stand Heading Into Tonight’s Game?

BYU finalized plans for the Big 12 title game with a 41-21 win over UCF last week. The Cougars have a three-game winning streak and hold an 11-1 overall record, including an 8-1 mark in conference play and a 4-1 record away from home.

The Cougars reached 11 regular-season wins for the first time since 2001. Kalani Sitake’s squad is also just one win shy of claiming the program’s first conference crown since 2007. They currently hold the No. 11 position in the PFSN College Football Playoff Ranking.

A win today would send BYU to the College Football Playoff for the first time ever. However, a loss to Texas Tech could drop them behind other bubble contenders.

“We’re looking forward to being at our best, because it’s required of us when playing the best team in the nation, and that’s Texas Tech,” Sitake said.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech wrapped up its regular season with a dominant 49-0 win over West Virginia last week. The Red Raiders are also 11-1 overall, with an 8-1 conference record and a perfect 7-0 mark at home. They stand at No. 6 in the PFSN College Football Playoff Ranking.

The Red Raiders are searching for their first conference championship since 1955. Joey McGuire’s team would remain in playoff contention even with a loss today, but the path to the National Championship Game would become far more difficult.

“I know there’s a lot of Red Raiders that are fired up and are going to be there in Arlington and have been waiting for this moment for us playing (in the) Big 12 championship,” McGuire said. “I’m excited, it’s gonna be an incredible game, and what’s gonna be fun is the stadium will be packed.”

BYU sits at No. 3 in the conference in scoring offense (34.0 points per game) and No. 2 in scoring defense (17.8 points per game). Texas Tech leads the conference in both scoring offense (43.2 points per game) and scoring defense (11.3 points per game).

BYU and Texas Tech have split their past two meetings at 1-1. The Red Raiders dominated the regular-season game 29-7 on November 8.
