Lane Kiffin has never been one to filter his thoughts. After targeting Ole Miss, he has now taken a shot at Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. National analyst Jake Crain has warned that Kiffin’s inability to use a no-comment policy is painting a massive, unnecessary bullseye on the LSU Tigers.

It all started when, questioning Smart’s outward appreciation for the SEC Championship Game, Kiffin pointedly referenced the 2024 title game, where Carson Beck suffered a costly elbow injury against Texas. But Crain was quick to sense the unintended consequences of this quip.
“Now, some will say, ‘Oh, well, he’s just trying to make a point,'” Crain observed on “Crain & Cone”. “I mean, Lane, at the end of the day, he’s going to tell you what he really thinks, whether you like it or not. But, man, I just don’t know if throwing strays out there to Georgia and all these teams around.
“I mean, look at what Sark’s doing now. It’s just going to add more fuel to the fire, and people are going to be lining up to whip their ass. Now, I don’t know if they will. I’m bullish on LSU.”
Crain’s caution comes at a highly critical juncture for LSU. The Tigers are entering a high-pressure campaign under Kiffin, tasked with navigating a brutal SEC schedule. Historically, elite teams like Georgia do not need extra motivation, but Kiffin’s commentary provides premium bulletin-board material.
By dragging Smart’s player injuries into the mix, Kiffin has shifted the focus away from football and onto personal politics. Giving opponents an emotional edge can be the difference between a win and a loss and, eventually, between a College Football Playoff berth and an underwhelming bowl appearance.
Crain concluded, “But just add another one into the file of Lane Kiffin, you know, talking about other coaches and what they think and what they believe. I just, man, sometimes I’m just like, man, maybe the no-comment thing is probably the best way to go.”
LSU is already dealing with internal adjustments, specifically keeping incoming transfer quarterback Sam Leavitt healthy after his recovery from a severe foot injury. The focus in Baton Rouge should ideally be internal, focusing on a brutal opening matchup against Clemson. Instead, Kiffin has forced his squad to answer for his press-conference barbs.
