TCU’s trip to Dublin ended with a five-point loss, a stack of penalty yards, and a postgame answer from Sonny Dykes that made his frustration with the officiating impossible to miss.
Asked what the Horned Frogs could have done differently to avoid being penalized so often in Saturday’s 15-10 loss to North Carolina, Dykes answered in four words. “Not have ACC officials,” he said, according to an X post from Oliver Hodgkinson.
Sonny Dykes Takes Aim at Officiating After TCU’s Loss
Dykes’ response came after TCU was flagged 11 times for 100 yards, compared with three penalties for 20 yards against Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels.

The Horned Frogs led 10-3 in the first quarter but did not score again, and the flags repeatedly made an already difficult offensive afternoon even messier.
“Not have ACC officials” – Sonny Dykes lashes out at officials after defeat in Dublin

One call stood out. Early in the third quarter, Jeremy Payne gained 7 yards on third-and-2 for a first down, then received a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following his first-down gesture. Instead of operating across midfield, TCU was pushed back to its own 39.
The official play-by-play records the penalty against Payne immediately after the run. Two plays later, Jaden Craig was sacked and fumbled, allowing North Carolina to recover at the TCU 31. Aeron Burrell eventually converted a 28-yard field goal that pushed the Tar Heels’ advantage to 15-10.
Payne was otherwise TCU’s best offensive weapon, rushing 25 times for 142 yards while adding five catches. He entered 2026 with a 75.0 RB Impact grade from his 2025 campaign, and his production in Dublin was one of the few things the Horned Frogs could consistently lean on.
TCU’s Penalty Problems Extended Beyond the Disputed Flag
Dykes clearly objected to the way the game was officiated, but TCU also committed several penalties that had little room for interpretation. The Horned Frogs were called for a false start, holding, facemask, and unnecessary roughness among their 11 accepted flags.
The final mistake was particularly costly. With North Carolina facing fourth-and-1 at the TCU 45 in the final minute, Belichick’s offense used a hard count, and Markis Deal jumped offside. The 5-yard penalty produced a first down and allowed UNC to finish the upset without giving Craig another possession.

It was a striking reversal from last year’s opener, when TCU spoiled Belichick’s college coaching debut with a 48-14 rout in Chapel Hill. This time, North Carolina held the Horned Frogs scoreless for the final three quarters and stopped them on four of their five fourth-down attempts.
TCU now gets an open week before hosting Grambling State on Sept. 12. That gives Dykes time to clean up the self-inflicted mistakes.
His four-word answer in Dublin also made clear that he does not believe every flag belonged in that category.’
