Lane Kiffin’s Vanity Fair comments about Ole Miss and his recruitment struggles have taken the college football world by storm. Now, these comments have drawn a blistering response from ESPN’s Rece Davis.
Why Rece Davis Is Calling Out Lane Kiffin Over His Ole Miss Comments
Davis appeared on the latest episode of the “College GameDay” podcast and explained how he didn’t disagree with Kiffin. For Davis, the timing of Kiffin’s remarks about the culture of Mississippi felt less like social advocacy and more like a calculated, unwarranted parting shot.
“The thing that struck me about this was that it was completely unnecessary from Lane Kiffin. Because you had, what, five years at Ole Miss to deal with some of these things and to confront them and to make a difference in a positive way. And instead, what you choose to do is bring it up in an interview, and it wouldn’t take much of a cynic to say that you’re doing it for some type of recruiting advantage or some type of final dig on the way out the door,” Davis said.
The crux of Davis’ argument rests on a simple question of leadership. Kiffin spent six years as the head coach at Ole Miss, a tenure where he was paid nearly $9 million annually and granted total control over the program’s image. Davis then pointed out the irony of a coach who cashed checks built on the success of Black athletes in Oxford, only to criticize the environment once he was safely tucked away in a seven-year, $91 million LSU contract.
“Again, not questioning the validity that it actually happened and that there might still be families of recruits in some quarters who feel that way. Although, I think it’s also fair to point out that Ole Miss has made great strides,” Davis explained.
“And not only great strides, they’ve had a tremendous number of Black athletes who’ve had great success in Oxford, both personally and professionally and within their collegiate careers. It just didn’t ring as being something other than some type of recruiting dig.”
The numbers suggest Kiffin knows exactly what he’s doing. At LSU, Kiffin has inherited a recruiting machine that historically outpaces Ole Miss. LSU has finished with a top 10 recruiting class in four of the last five years.
This isn’t the first time Davis has called out Kiffin’s rhetoric. When Kiffin initially left for LSU, he spoke about “pouring into young people.” Davis was equally skeptical then, stating, “I don’t need to hear any more about pouring into young people… this is about one thing: winning and his career.”
With the LSU move, Kiffin might just have done that. However, he continues to stir the pot by changing the narrative around his messy exit. That might reach a tipping point when the Tigers come to Oxford on Sept. 19.
PFSN’s CFB Playoff Meter currently gives the Tigers a 39.2% chance to make the College Football Playoff.
