College football spent the offseason asking where eligibility ends. Texas Tech decided the answer was somewhere after an NFL minicamp invitation, a court order, and a strange quarterback summer.
Thomas Castellanos committed to the Red Raiders on Wednesday after a Kentucky court granted him temporary relief for a fifth season. That was enough to restart the national argument over what college eligibility means in 2026. Add Texas Tech’s Brendan Sorsby saga to the backdrop, and the reactions arrived with flamethrowers.
CFB World Sounds Off on Thomas Castellanos to Texas Tech
On3 reported that Castellanos will join a room led by Will Hammond, who is returning from a torn ACL. Castellanos is not being handed the QB1 job. He gives Texas Tech insurance, and his agent told On3 he is open to taking snaps at wide receiver.

On3’s Pete Nakos also revealed that, “Throughout the process, Thomas Castellanos’ agency @JustWinMGMT told @On3 that the QB was open to being used as a wide receiver. He did WR drills at the end of his pro day, and it won’t be a surprise to see Texas Tech explore ways to use him at WR.”

Garrett Armbrust provided his insights on Texas Tech’s decision and wrote, “Anyone that think Thomas Castellanos is going to Texas Tech to be their starting QB doesn’t know CFB. He’s going there to be an athletic package that can run & I wouldn’t be surprised if they try and run him as a pass catcher at some points. Will Hammond is still obviously QB1.”
Max Chadwick added, “Pretty phenomenal get by @jkbtjc_53 and @JoeyMcGuireTTU here. Still expect Will Hammond to start the season, but Castellanos may be the best backup in the country. He’s more than capable if Hammond gets hurt or is struggling.”

Texas Tech’s QB Offseason Somehow Got Stranger
The Castellanos situation is separate from Sorsby’s. Sorsby was initially ruled permanently ineligible by the NCAA after admitting to thousands of impermissible bets, including wagers involving Indiana while he played there. A Texas court temporarily restored his eligibility, but Texas Tech later said he would not play in 2026. Sorsby then dropped his lawsuit, ending his college career.

Castellanos reached this point through his own eligibility challenge. He went undrafted after one season at Florida State and received an invitation to the Miami Dolphins’ rookie minicamp before pursuing another college season.
There is a football reason for Tech’s interest. Castellanos threw for 2,760 yards and rushed for 557 more in 2025. His 86.5 PFN CFB QB Impact score ranked 18th nationally.
Texas Tech wanted depth behind Hammond. It got a 32-game college starter who spent part of the spring chasing the NFL.
Whether that is smart roster building or another sign that the eligibility rulebook has become optional apparently depends on which corner of college football’s internet you ask.
