President Trump Intervenes As College Football Playoff Expansion Threatens Army-Navy Game

President Trump stepped in to protect the long-standing tradition of the Army-Navy Game amid the discussions of rumored playoff extension.

The Army-Navy Game remains one of the historic and most iconic rivalries in college sports. The rivalry is branded “America’s Game” and marked by deep traditions and spirited head-to-head competition.

The PFSN College Football Offense Impact Metric‘s No. 15 team, Navy, ended the 2025 season with an 11-2 record. Meanwhile, the Army finished the season at 7-6 and was ranked No. 74 in the same metric.

CFP Expansion Draws President Trump’s Attention As Army-Navy Game Faces Uncertainty

The Army-Navy Game has been a historic event that regularly draws the sitting U.S. president, and President Donald Trump has expressed his desire to preserve that tradition.

“The Army-Navy Game is one of our Greatest American Traditions – Unmatched Patriotism, Courage, and Honor!” Trump said (via Truth Social).

“This incredible Tradition is now at risk of being pushed aside by more College Playoff Games and Big TV Money. NOT ANYMORE! Under my Administration, the second Saturday in December belongs to Army-Navy, and ONLY Army-Navy! I will soon sign a Historic Executive Order securing an EXCLUSIVE 4-hour Broadcast window, so this National Event stands above Commercial Postseason Games. No other Game of Team can violate this Time Slot!!!

“On the field, they are rivals, but on the battlefield they are America’s unstoppable Patriots, defending our Country with tremendous Strength and Heart. We must protect the Tradition, and the Players, who protect us. Please let this serve as Notice to ALL Television Networks, Stations, and Outlets. God Bless American, and God Bless our great Army-Navy Game!!! President Donald J. Trump.”

Trump’s comments come as College Football Playoff expansion continues to be discussed, with several potential formats under consideration. Some of those proposals can compress the schedule and threaten the Army-Navy Game.

One possible format includes play-in games between the 13th and 16th seeds and the 14th and 15th seeds, which can theoretically be scheduled on the same day as the Army-Navy Game.

While no final decision has been made regarding playoff expansion, Trump has made clear that he wants to ensure the Army-Navy Game remains protected.

Trump attended the 126th Army-Navy Game in December at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, where Navy beat Army 17-16. He greeted players and team captains on the field before the kickoff.

Before the game, Trump posted on Truth Social that when asked which team he was supporting, he dismissed the question, saying anyone expecting an answer must be joking.

The Navy currently leads the all-time series with 64 wins, 55 losses, and seven ties. The Army has not defeated a Navy team ranked in the AP Poll since 1955.

The 2026 Army-Navy Game is scheduled for Dec. 12 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The rivalry will head to Philadelphia the following year, with Lincoln Financial Field hosting the game on Dec. 11, 2027.
