The 2026 college football season is underway, yet Eli Drinkwitz believes one of the sport’s most basic questions still lacks a stable answer: who is actually eligible to play.

On Saturday, the Missouri head coach unloaded on college athletics as lawsuits, conference rules, and temporary restraining orders continue reshaping eligibility in real time.

Days before the Tigers open against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Drinkwitz said coaches have warned for years that the sport was heading toward this uncertainty, only to watch the rulebook become increasingly dependent on court decisions.

“Mike Elko said it a couple days ago. The season’s kicked off and we do not know what the rules are for eligibility? That’s embarrassing, man,” he said. This is the second-biggest sport in the United States – most watched sport in the United States – and for us to be operating like this is a complete clown show, and it’s disappointing.

“And coaches have been on the forefront of saying this, and it’s been ignored. It’s been ignored. I would say now, this is what they get… Administrators and courtrooms have got to figure out what the rules are now, and we’ve been saying this for years and years and years.”

His frustration was not limited to one court case. Drinkwitz blamed college sports leaders for failing to establish a durable national framework and pointed to the federal bill known as the Protect College Sports Act as an opportunity that could have provided clearer guardrails.

“This stuff is not good for any student-athlete, and it’s a direct reflection of our inability as leaders to come up with a plan,” Drinkwitz said.

Missouri opens its season Thursday while eligibility standards are still being challenged around the country.

Courts Keep Rewriting the SEC’s New Rules

The latest dispute centers on athletes who exhausted college eligibility, entered professional leagues, and are now attempting to return to college. The SEC, Big Ten, Big 12, and ACC all adopted rules this week intended to prevent former professionals from rejoining conference rosters.

Those restrictions immediately met legal resistance. A Texas judge temporarily blocked the SEC’s rule on Thursday, and a Louisiana judge issued an amended order on Friday restoring eligibility for some athletes while preventing the league from punishing schools that recruit former professional hopefuls. The latest ruling directly affects players attempting to join LSU.

The NCAA’s new model allows five seasons of competition within a five-year eligibility window, but athletes who exhausted their eligibility by the end of the 2025-26 season were left out of the transition, which is why many are suing for a fifth year.

Drinkwitz made it clear that Missouri will adapt to whatever rules survive.

“If I’m told that I can add players, then I’ll look to add players,” he said. “I’m going to do whatever I’m supposed to do to help the University of Missouri win.”

The Tigers went 8-5 in 2025. Their offense finished No. 35 nationally with an 80.1 Offense Impact Score, while Drinkwitz enters Year 7 at Missouri with a 46-29 record.

Coaches are preparing for games while lawyers are still helping determine who can play in them, so his frustration is understandable.
