‘Such a Tragic Story,’ ‘Devastating’ — Prayers Pour In for MicahJo Barnett and Family After William Jewell RB Passes Away Following Sideline Collapse

William Jewell College RB MicahJo Barnett sadly died after scoring a touchdown on Saturday, leading many to send him and the school their prayers.

The college football world sent prayers and condolences after learning of William Jewell College Cardinals junior running back MicahJo Barnett’s death during a game on Saturday.

Barnett scored a touchdown during his team’s contest against Fort Lewis College at Greene Stadium in Liberty, Mo., yet collapsed on the sidelines. He was taken to a local hospital, where Barnett was pronounced dead.

Barnett was just 20 years old and was a 5-foot-8 junior running back from Liberty North High School.

CFB World Sends Prayers for Jewell RB MicahJo Barnett

Oliver Hodgkinson, chief publishing officer at PFN, offered his thoughts on Barnett not only as a football player but as a person, too.

“MicahJo Barnett was a talented football player who led Jewell in rushing yards in 2025 despite only playing five games,” Hodgkinson wrote. “But he was also a celebrated scholar, a son, and a brother to six siblings. It’s always a tragedy to see someone go too soon. RIP”.

Former Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III also had a few things to say regarding Jewell and his passing.

Griffin wrote and posted online, “Prayers up for William Jewel College RB MicahJo Barnett’s family, and friends and loved ones. MicahJo passed away today after scoring a TD and collapsing on the sideline shortly after. He was only 20 years old.”

One online influencer noted Barnett’s tragic death on a sunny Saturday afternoon.

This person wrote, “We really never know which moment is our last. This is such a tragic story…. MicahJo Barnett, a running back for William Jewell College, scores a touchdown and is full of happiness, then collapses moments later on the sideline.

“He was taken by ambulance to the hospital where he was pronounced dead,” the influencer wrote. “Unfathomable loss for his family, teammates, and friends. I cannot imagine their shock and devastation. They are all in my prayers.”

Football Forever’s account on X also announced Barnett’s death to its followers. This was shared along with a photo of Barnett: “William Jewell College RB MicahJo Barnett passed away after a medical emergency during today’s game vs. Fort Lewis. Barnett, who had just scored a touchdown before collapsing, received immediate medical attention on the sideline before being taken to a local hospital.”

Another influencer also added her thoughts on this tragedy: “Prayers up for MicahJo Barnett’s family and the William Jewell squad because losing a teammate mid-game like that is completely unimaginable.”

Fox4 News Kansas City sports anchor Harold R. Kuntz shared a video of Barnett scoring his touchdown, then celebrating with his teammates. Kuntz wrote, “Tragic, tragic day at William Jewell, remembering MicahJo Barnett. So much happiness scoring this Touchdown in the 1st quarter. Life is precious.”

Collin Rugg, co-owner of Trending Politics, posted a lengthy statement and comment after learning of Barnett’s death.

Rugg wrote, “College football player MicahJo Barnett has sadly passed away moments after he scored a touchdown in Liberty, Missouri. The game was suspended after Barnett reportedly collapsed on the sidelines.

“Barnett was taken by an ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead,” Rugg continued. “William Jewell College and the Liberty community mourn the passing of MicahJo Barnett. Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, teammates, friends, coaches, and faculty and staff,’ William Jewell said. Devastating. Pray for his family.”

The MLB’s Kansas City Royals also sent their thoughts and prayers toward Barnett and his family.

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas wrote on Saturday afternoon, “Life truly is precious. Praying for this young man’s family.”

Barnett’s death sent waves of sadness throughout his teammates’ lives on a Saturday when their teammate died after scoring a touchdown. May he be remembered for his life both on and off the field.
