On Saturday, Ohio State did something that usually happens at the end of a college football season.
The Buckeyes decided to hold Senior Day before their 2026 season opener against Ball State, honoring their senior class in Week 1 rather than waiting until their final regular-season home game against their rival, the Michigan Wolverines.
College Football World Split Over Buckeyes Kicking Off Season With Senior Day
Senior Day has traditionally been reserved for the Buckeyes’ final home game, recognizing the seniors as they prepare to take the field one last time at their home stadium in Columbus. However, head coach Ryan Day had already explained in August that Ohio State decided to make the change in part to allow the team to keep its focus on “The Game” — the November 28 clash against Michigan.
“We talked about it and had long conversations about [moving Senior Day]. The traditions at Ohio State are significant, very strong, and something we all respect,” Day had said on the change.
“When we look at all the things that go on that weekend [of the Michigan showdown], the way things have changed, there are some things that we thought about… There’s already enough distractions that week. This was just one more thing that we could move.”
The unusual decision certainly divided the college football world. While some accused the Buckeyes head coach of being terrified of another loss to Michigan when they come to Columbus, others called it a smart decision.

One fan shared the same feeling, writing: “Tell me your are worried about losing to Michigan without telling me.”
“It sounds crazy when you’re the first ones to do it. I kind of like it. Ensures the seniors are likely healthy to actually play on their day,” a fan posted before adding a jab at the Buckeyes: “Plus they’re scared of Michigan.”

One college football influencer focused more on the decision to break a tradition and, with it, the emotions of a ceremony such as Senior Day.
“This is a strange move,” they said. “I get the whole ‘avoiding distractions’ thing, but it screams ‘we’re worried about losing to Michigan at home again.’ Senior day is supposed to be the senior’s LAST home game. The FINAL time they’ll ever play on that field. All the emotion of it ENDING.”

However, not everyone was against the change.

Meanwhile, one fan saw some practical benefits in the decision as well, suggesting that holding Senior Day at the beginning of the season could actually be better for the players who are being honored.
“Hate this team with a burning passion, but I think I might prefer this. Everybody is healthy and ready to go, nothing matches the excitement of a home opener, better weather, and it’s still a ‘last’ for the seniors (last time experiencing the beginning of the season),” the fan pointed out.

Ohio State’s decision breaks one of its own popular traditions. But with Michigan week bringing enormous pressure to Columbus, the Buckeyes moved Senior Day out of the way in order to keep their attention on winning against their rivals.

While Michigan leads the rivalry with a 62-52-6 record in the all-time series, Ohio State won the most recent matchup 27-9 when the two sides met on November 29, 2025, at Ann Arbor.
Now, the Buckeyes want to continue that momentum when it hosts the Wolverines this season on November 28.
