Matt Rhule Shuns CBS Dylan Raiola Disrespect as He Makes $40M NIL Reality Revelation

Matt Rhule defends Dylan Raiola and reveals $40M NIL reality as Nebraska stays competitive despite 30-27 loss to Michigan.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers’ narrow 30-27 loss to Michigan served as both a reminder of how far Matt Rhule’s program has come and how much work still lies ahead. Despite the setback, Nebraska showed competitiveness against a ranked opponent, a stark contrast to the 45-7 defeat the team suffered against the Wolverines just two years ago.

This performance left fans wrestling with optimism and frustration. They saw evident progress while still falling short of a signature win.

Dylan Raiola’s Performance Sparks Matt Rhule’s Defense Against CBS Ranking Snub

The Huskers had their chances to win, but early miscues proved costly. Their first three possessions ended without points, setting a tone for a game where missed opportunities ultimately defined the outcome.

Still, Nebraska battled until the end, a fight highlighted by a 52-yard strike from Dylan Raiola to Jacory Barney Jr. just before halftime that tied the score at 17. Michigan eventually pulled away to secure the win, but Raiola’s performance offered a significant silver lining even in defeat.

Against Michigan, Raiola endured a career-high seven sacks and threw his first interception of the season. The pick came on a contested throw to a tightly covered Luke Lindenmeyer, and it quickly turned into a Bryce Underwood touchdown that put Nebraska in a 10-0 hole.

Despite the pressure, Raiola displayed impressive resilience, finishing with over 300 yards passing and three touchdowns while completing 30 of his 41 attempts.

For context, no quarterback had posted 300 yards and three touchdowns against Michigan since Stetson Bennett accomplished the feat in the 2021 College Football Playoff. Raiola’s showing underscored his growth, even as Nebraska’s shortcomings in other areas were exposed.

Why Did Rhule Defend His Quarterback Against Media Rankings?

Given that performance, many in the Husker world were baffled when CBS Sports dropped him one spot in its quarterback rankings, from No. 27 to No. 28. The move was particularly confusing after a four-touchdown performance against Akron the previous week. The decision, made without explanation, raised eyebrows across the fanbase. Rhule was blunt when asked about the narratives surrounding his quarterback during his recent press conference.

“I’m very hard on our players from an accountability measure,” Rhule began. “I believe that I hold them highly accountable because I want every player someday to say that their life is better because they played for us. And I know people might kind of roll their eyes, but that’s all I want. I want them to say, ‘I had a better life because I went there.’”

Rhule clarified that while he holds his players to a high standard internally, he will defend them fiercely against outside criticism that he feels misses the bigger picture. “So that might be sometimes challenging them. But outside of that, I’m going to defend them to the end. I know how hard they work. Even if a guy didn’t play well, what’s the point of burying him? What is the point of burying that kid? I want to try to build them up,” he said.

He then directed his criticism toward what he views as lazy media narratives that fail to acknowledge Raiola’s technical growth. “When it comes to the media, sometimes I think things are just so lazy,” Rhule stated. “He’s completing 75% of his passes. He’s played two Power Four teams. Even the play with the touchdown…that’s an elite-level check. That’s not somebody in the headset looking over to the sideline. That’s Dylan [Raiola] playing quarterback, man.”

Rhule also emphasized that the interception was not solely on his quarterback, pointing out how the play broke down. “It’s also on the tight end,” he added. “Tight end breaks out when he’s supposed to sit down.”

What Warning Did Rhule Issue About College Football’s Financial Future?

Beyond his defense of Raiola, Rhule also spoke candidly about college football’s rapidly changing financial landscape. When asked how Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals and potential revenue sharing could shape rosters in the future, he did not mince words. He predicted a future where top programs operate with massive payrolls, creating a new arms race for talent.

“They’ll just let it go by,” he warned. “They’re just going to have true NIL deals that equate to… there’s going to be $40 million rosters out there.” It was a stark acknowledgment of the high-stakes financial environment developing across the sport.

While Nebraska fell just short of snapping its long drought against ranked teams, the combination of Raiola’s steady rise and Rhule’s fiery defense of his players suggests the program is building something sustainable.

With Raiola surpassing last year’s touchdown total just four games into the season, the Huskers’ foundation continues to strengthen. The challenge is to turn these competitive losses into breakthrough wins as Big Ten play intensifies. Nebraska is set to play against Michigan State on Saturday, October 4, with kickoff at 4 p.m. ET.
