New LSU OC’s Dad, Charlie Weis Sr., Offers Thought-Provoking Insight

After Charlie Weis Jr. became a hot topic after being linked to the NFL, the offensive coordinator’s father recently shared a message about the struggles of his former job. Weis Sr. spent multiple years as a coach in the NFL, including with the New York Giants.

“People need to understand that when there are coaching changes, many coach families are affected. Moving, selling & buying houses, changing schools for your kids, leaving friends. And often this is all being done by the wives. Underappreciated how tough this is,” Weis tweeted.

Weis Sr. spent multiple years in the NFL. He was an assistant coach with the Giants from 1990 to 1992 before joining the New England Patriots staff from 1993 to 1996. He also worked for the New York Jets from 1997 to 1999 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2010.

Additionally, Weis Sr. has a good standing with the Giants’ ownership. This fueled rumors about the potential of his son making the switch to the NFL. However, the future LSU offensive coordinator shut down those rumors quickly with a statement on Tuesday.

On3’s Chris Low reported that Weis Jr. had no interest in the Giants or the NFL, noting he was focused on finishing his duties at Ole Miss before joining Lane Kiffin at LSU.

Weis Jr. was a key part of Ole Miss’ offensive playcalling this season, which ranked 13th nationally in total offense per PFSN’s College Football Offense Impact Metric, averaging 309.6 passing yards per game, and 11th in scoring at 37.3 points per game.

After joining Florida Atlantic in 2018 as Kiffin’s offensive coordinator to replace Kendal Briles, Weis Jr. has worked for more than four years as Kiffin’s offensive coordinator across multiple programs. A recent statement from Weis Sr. shared some insight into the dynamic.

“Loyalty to the man who made him a division 1 OC at 24 years of age. Loyalty matters,” Weis Sr. stated in a response. Kiffin’s offensive coordinator was named the OC at just 24 following previous stints with Alabama and the Atlanta Falcons.

“Age is irrelevant. Experience is relevant. I can be 50 years old, and if I’ve only coached for three years, then I’ve only coached for three years. He was this child coaching prodigy. When everyone else was playing in college, he was coaching,” Kiffin stated.

Following his decision, the two have formed an extremely successful partnership that will continue at LSU. However, Weis Jr. still has a season to finish at Ole Miss as he prepares for the Fiesta Bowl against the Miami Hurricanes this week in the College Football Playoff semifinal.
