Lane Kiffin seems increasingly confident about LSU during this part of the offseason. Meanwhile, he is also stirring up rivalry by taking subtle shots at his former programs.
LSU Head Coach Lane Kiffin Sparks SEC Drama With a Jab at Tennessee and Ole Miss
Kiffin shared an image on X on Saturday that read:
“Imagine how boring your life would be if you didn’t have me to annoy you.”
However, the caption was even more interesting, as Kiffin mentioned Tennessee and Ole Miss football, appearing to deliver an indirect jab (as Vols and Rebels fans may interpret it).
“Think about this for a second @Vol_Football @OleMissFB 🤔🧡💙,” Kiffin tweeted.
Kiffin took over as Tennessee’s head coach in 2009 and was seen as the successor to longtime Vols coach Phillip Fulmer after he was fired following a 5-7 season in 2008. His debut season in Knoxville was inconsistent, finishing 7-6 and ending with a heavy loss to Virginia Tech in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. He didn’t stick around for a turnaround and left after just one year to take the USC job.
Kiffin’s exit caused major outrage on campus, and many fans have never forgiven his late-night departure. During his time at Ole Miss, he also made a return trip to Knoxville, and Vols fans threw objects onto the field, including a mustard bottle and a golf ball that struck Kiffin after a controversial decision in that game. He has continued to joke about Tennessee since then, keeping the rivalry alive.
Much like his Tennessee exit, rumors of Kiffin leaving for LSU swirled while Ole Miss was preparing for a potential playoff run. Many thought he would stay and lead the Rebels to a potential National Championship run, but he left.
His six-year run at Ole Miss, from 2020 to 2025, was the most successful and stable stretch of his career. He went 55-19 over six seasons and was the first coach in program history to lead the Rebels to three consecutive 10-win seasons from 2023 to 2025.
Kiffin also led Ole Miss to an 11-1 regular season in 2025, marking the Rebels’ first ever with 11 regular-season wins. He reportedly wanted to remain with Ole Miss through the College Football Playoff last season while also taking the LSU job, but Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter rejected the arrangement. Kiffin is now seen as a villain by Rebels fans as well, and his social media activity proves he is fully embracing the backlash from both fan bases.
With Ole Miss now behind him, Kiffin has fully shifted his attention to LSU. PFSN is already optimistic about the Tigers’ future, giving them a 37.1% chance of reaching the College Football Playoff in the 2026 season.
