Lane Kiffin and his coaching staff have already had multiple chances this offseason to watch LSU players during over a dozen spring practices. A number of true freshmen are even taking first-team reps, and Kiffin is already seeing strong potential in that group.
Lane Kiffin Praises Five-Star LSU Defensive Lineman Richard Anderson
LSU signed the No. 1 defensive lineman in America last December in five-star recruit Richard Anderson. He also flashed surprising offensive-like ability at practice this week, showing smooth movement and strong hands while getting the better of right tackle Weston Davis.
The Louisiana standout has also undergone an incredible physical transformation this offseason and is now listed at 6-foot-3, 339 pounds. His progress drew public praise from Lane Kiffin during Tuesday’s press conference.
“He has a really unique skill set,” Kiffin said. “I sent that clip to his coach in high school, because we had talked about that coming out. He’s just really unique. He’s one of those really unique, high, high-end, top, first-round potential that no matter what you coach, you can’t coach guys in that position. You can’t coach guys into that.
“And he has that. So, you even see it like how he jumped out. So that was his idea. He wanted to go into the one-on-ones and run a route. And you just saw how good he looked doing it. He’s really gifted.”
Other top schools heavily recruited Anderson until National Signing Day, but LSU successfully kept him locked in and secured his commitment in December. He was the No. 2 defensive lineman in the 2026 class and the No. 2 recruit in Louisiana, according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.
Anderson helped Edna Karr High School (New Orleans, Louisiana) achieve back-to-back 14-0 seasons, culminating in the Division I Select state title in both 2024 and 2025. Edna Karr won the 2025 state title in his senior season, as he had 53 tackles, 10 sacks, 22 quarterback hurries, recovered 2 fumbles, and returned an interception for a touchdown.
Kiffin is now banking on players like Anderson to kick off his debut season in Baton Rouge successfully. He had high praise for the Edna Karr standout earlier this month as well.
“Phenomenal prospect,” Kiffin said, via Fox 8’s Garland Gillen. “This guy is going to be a great player; it’s only a matter of time before that happens. I love how physical he is, how hard he’s worked. These guys are really seniors in high school. I’m really excited about him, very well-coached.”
LSU had a terrible season in 2025 with merely 7 wins, but the Tigers’ defense was among the best units in the country, ranking No. 20 in the nation with an 84.6 score in the PFSN College Football Defense Impact Metric. With players like Anderson, many believe the Tigers’ defense will only improve in 2026.
