LSU has stayed in the spotlight this offseason following Lane Kiffin’s move to Baton Rouge last November. Given Kiffin’s success at Ole Miss in the last few years, expectations are high in his first season with the Tigers in 2026.
Lane Kiffin Gets Real on High Expectations as LSU Era Begins
After leading Ole Miss to an 11-1 regular-season finish in 2025 along with a College Football Playoff appearance, Kiffin arrived at LSU carrying both momentum and a proven track record. During his time in Oxford, Kiffin compiled a 55-19 overall record and led the Rebels to four separate 10-win seasons.
Besides his successful resume, the finances involved in LSU’s coaching change proved just how high-stakes and financially driven the modern college football landscape has become. Brian Kelly even suggested that Kiffin’s current roster might have cost as much as $40 million.
Amid growing hype, Kiffin made it clear after LSU’s first day of spring practice that he is not allowing outside noise to shape his approach.
“Expectations can be really scary,” Kiffin said on Tuesday. “We don’t look at it that way. We don’t talk that way. That’s outcome-based, not process-based. It is much more about the day-to-day, improving our players and coaching better.”
Kiffin wasted no time reshaping LSU’s roster, bringing in 54 new players for the 2026 season, and the overhaul paid off on paper, as 247Sports ranked LSU’s transfer class No. 1 nationally. However, after the Tigers completed their first day of spring practice, Kiffin was quick to temper excitement. He admitted the roster looks promising, but he also said that having talent on paper is far from the same as becoming a high-performing team.
Reflecting on his first official practice, Kiffin had an emotional confession.
“Day 1 today to finally be able to be out there in a practice format was great,” Kiffin said. “You know, kind of had a moment before too of just reminding myself of how grateful I am to be here, appreciate it, but also the responsibility level that I have coming here to LSU, to the people of Louisiana, the great players and coaches that have been here before. So, you know, I don’t understand that. And that was pretty cool just thinking of that as I walked out on the field today.”
Since taking over, Kiffin has frequently described LSU as “just different,” and he expanded on that sentiment on Tuesday.
“I really enjoy Louisiana parents & how they think & what they put into their kids,” Kiffin said. “That’s a different mindset. The expectations, the great players that played here, the stadium, all of that is just different than other programs.”
The Tigers will officially begin their new era under Kiffin when they host their first home game against Clemson on Sept 5. PFSN gives the Tigers a 37.1% of securing the CFP in 2026.
