James Franklin Vows To Restore Frank Beamer-Era Excellence to Virginia Tech Football

James Franklin takes over Virginia Tech football, aiming to restore Frank Beamer-era success and lead the Hokies back to national relevance.

It’s a new era for Virginia Tech football.

After several seasons of unmet expectations, the Hokies found themselves at a crossroads. Once a proud program defined by toughness, consistency, and national relevance under legendary coach Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech had drifted from its identity.

Why James Franklin Is the Right Move for Virginia Tech Football

Adding to the urgency of a course correction is the recent success of in-state rival University of Virginia football, a development that only intensified the pressure to reset the program’s trajectory.

Virginia Tech responded decisively, landing one of the most sought-after names on the coaching market: former Penn State Nittany Lions football head coach James Franklin.

Franklin was seen on Virginia Tech’s behind-the-scenes football series called “Set In Stone,” talking about how he wants and expects to bring back success to the gridiron for the Hokies. He went on to say:

“A lot of these players, the current players on this roster they don’t remember that Virginia Tech they’re too young. So getting them to understand, they’ve heard the stories, they know the history, and it’s part of the reason they came here.”

This was him talking about the program’s past success and how they look to get back to that style of football. Then, he talked about how he wants to restore Frank Beamer-era excellence by saying:

“We want Coach Beamer and Bud Foster and all those guys to be very proud. And I want them to watch the games and say that’s how Virginia Tech football is supposed to look.”

While some Penn State fans may view his departure as overdue, Franklin’s body of work speaks for itself. He was the embodiment of consistency in Happy Valley, guiding the Nittany Lions to multiple 10-plus-win seasons and even a College Football Playoff semifinal appearance in 2024.

Under his leadership, Penn State maintained a high offensive standard, not falling below a top-30 PFSN CFB Offensive Impact Grade since 2022. That sustained production suggested a program on the cusp of true national championship contention, even if the ultimate breakthrough never materialized.

Now, Franklin turns the page.

At Virginia Tech, the challenge is both immediate and long-term. The Hokies struggled mightily on defense last season, allowing 30.2 points per game, ranking 106th nationally, and finishing with one of the worst PFSN CFB Defensive Impact scores in the ACC. For a program historically built on physical defense and disciplined play, those numbers underscore how far things have slipped.

Franklin’s coaching will prove pivotal in reversing that trend. Known for his hard-nosed coaching acumen and ability to develop talent, he brings a blueprint for rebuilding that aligns with Virginia Tech’s traditional identity.

However, the task won’t be easy. The roster took a significant hit following the previous coaching staff’s departure, leaving gaps that must be addressed quickly.

Still, that reset may ultimately be a blessing in disguise.

Franklin has built a reputation as a relentless recruiter and program builder. If he can reestablish strong pipelines and develop players early in his tenure, the Hokies could accelerate their return to relevance. In today’s college football landscape, rapid turnarounds are possible, but only with the right leadership and vision.

That’s exactly what Virginia Tech is betting on.

The expectation isn’t just improvement. It’s a return to excellence. A return to the standard set during the Beamer era, when Virginia Tech was synonymous with toughness, special teams dominance, and national respect.

With James Franklin now at the helm, the Hokies believe that standard is within reach once again.
