Dan Lanning’s Oregon has made significant progress in the last few seasons. The Ducks have elevated their play to a level where they are now consistently part of the conversation for a National Championship alongside big programs like Ohio State.
Dan Lanning Shows a Blueprint for Long-Term Success With Elite Recruiting, Says George Wrighster
Lanning led Oregon to the Big Ten championship and the College Football Playoff in 2024. The Ducks kept up the momentum in 2025 as well, going 13-2 and losing only once in the regular season to Indiana. They ultimately reached the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Peach Bowl but lost to Indiana 56-22.
That loss was brutal, but expectations are high for Oregon to continue its playoff success in 2026 as well. Former Oregon and New York Giants tight end George Wrighster has always been a vocal supporter of his alma mater, and he is loving how Lanning and Co. are handling recruitment in Eugene this spring for a bright future ahead.
“A lot of people are missing whats going on at Oregon. Ducks aren’t just recruiting talent – they’re selling proof of concept. When Lanning gets elite kids on campus during spring ball, he’s selling system, development + NFL potential. Easily a top 5 program for a DECADE+,” Wrighster tweeted.
Lanning has made Oregon a lucrative destination for players, as the Ducks frequently secure commitments from elite recruits, and their recent recruiting cycles show the Ducks aren’t just competing with the elite; they are becoming the standard.

The Ducks’ 2026 class was ranked among the best in program history, featuring elite talents like offensive tackle Immanuel Iheanacho, safety Jett Washington, and tight end Kendre Harrison.
The 2027 class is still in its early stages, but Lanning is already stacking talent. The class is already headlined by four-star talents like defensive lineman Zane Rowe, offensive tackle Drew Fielder, running back Cadarius McMiller, and defensive lineman Cam Pritchett.
While other programs may boast more total commits, Oregon prioritizes quality over quantity, maintaining one of the highest average recruit ratings in the country. The Ducks are outpacing traditional Big Ten powers like Ohio State and Michigan and stand as the only West Coast program consistently competing with the SEC’s recruiting heavyweights.
For elite prospects, Oregon remains an attractive destination due to Lanning’s coaching, player development, and recent success. The Ducks finished the 2025 season being ranked No. 11 in PFSN’s College Football Defense Impact Metric and No. 13 in the Offense Impact Metric.

The Ducks’ success translates to the next level as well. Ten Oregon players were selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, the fourth-highest total of any school. Defensive tackle Derrick Harmon went No. 21 overall to the Pittsburgh Steelers, becoming only the 10th defensive player in Oregon history to be a first-round pick. Offensive tackle Josh Conerly Jr. followed, going No. 29 overall to the Washington Commanders.
Besides coaching and on-field success, Oregon has strategically leveraged the NIL era to its advantage. Contributions from Phil Knight and others have helped build a professional-style environment that rivals a pro franchise more than a typical college program.
