Delaware vs. Jacksonville State Head-to-Head Record

The historical series between these two former FCS juggernauts remains remarkably brief, with just two previous encounters on record. Delaware maintains a perfect 2-0 record against Jacksonville State, having secured victories both on the road in Alabama and within the friendly confines of their home stadium.

Their most recent clash came during the 2020 FCS Playoffs, where the Blue Hens emerged victorious with a hard-fought 20-14 triumph that propelled them into the semifinal round of the postseason tournament.

The initial meeting between these programs dates back nearly five decades to 1978, when Delaware dominated in a high-scoring shootout, claiming a decisive 42-27 victory.

This limited sample size makes their upcoming encounter particularly intriguing, as both programs have undergone significant transformations since transitioning to the FBS level.

Delaware vs. Jacksonville State Prediction

A fascinating matchup awaits us on Wednesday night, with Delaware looking to build on a strong start to their debut FBS season with a road win against the reigning champions. After a difficult out-of-conference slate, the Gamecocks have gathered steam in CUSA play, knocking off Liberty and Sam Houston to take a 3-3 overall and undefeated conference record into Week 8.

Although the Blue Hens can’t play for a spot in the CUSA Championship Game as a first-year FBS program (they can claim the regular season crown), they can play spoiler if they hand the Gamecocks their first conference defeat of the year. How likely is that, however? These are two closely matched teams, with this game capable of turning on the smallest of margins.

Delaware’s confidence stems from an offense that has been more efficient than its opponents, particularly in the passing game and the turnover battle. Behind Nick Minicucci, they have a legitimate dual threat (15 total scores), who earned PFSN Midseason All-CUSA honors earlier in the week. Yet, they’re also multifaceted, with Jo Silver adding a dangerous ground alternative.

Defensively, the Blue Hens have allowed fewer points per game than the Gamecocks (albeit marginally), and their pass defense has had an element of bend but don’t break. They’ve allowed 239.2 passing yards per game, yet they’ve given up just seven passing touchdowns, tied for the third-fewest in CUSA so far this year. Safety KT Seay is a key player to watch on the back end.

Furthermore, Jacksonville State has had some difficulties stopping the passing game, allowing 7.9 yards per game and 10 touchdowns, while only snagging three interceptions so far this season. That was nearly their undoing against Sam Houston last time out, with Hunter Watson throwing more touchdowns in one outing than his previous four appearances combined.

On offense, Jacksonville State isn’t equipped to play from behind. Their success relies on one of the top running backs in the country, Cam Cook. If they get behind on the scoreboard early, there isn’t the same level of confidence in the quarterback room that there is for Delaware. However, if the Gamecocks take the lead early and control the game through their star running back, they should be able to extend their undefeated CUSA run.

Prediction: Delaware 27, Jacksonville State 30
