Coach Prime’s Colorado Snags FCS Transfer Portal WR Weapon for Julian Lewis

Ernest Campbell commits to Colorado from Sacramento State, reuniting with new OC Brennan Marion to give Julian Lewis a deep threat.

The Sacramento State-to-Boulder pipeline continues. Ernest Campbell, one of the most explosive playmakers in the FCS last season, announced his commitment to Colorado on Wednesday, reuniting with former head coach Brennan Marion and giving quarterback Julian Lewis a legitimate deep threat.

Campbell becomes the third Hornet to follow Marion to the Rockies this month, joining running backs Jaquail Smith and Damian Henderson II. Marion was hired as Colorado’s offensive coordinator in December, and he’s wasted no time raiding his former roster for pieces that fit his speed-centric “Go-Go” offense.

Coach Prime Adds Productive Sacramento State WR Ernest Campbell

Campbell tallied 37 catches for 755 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025, leading Sacramento State in all three major receiving categories as a redshirt freshman, earning FCS Freshman All-American honors in the process. He became the first player in Hornets history to record six receptions of 50-plus yards — five of which went for touchdowns.

His best performance came against eventual FCS playoff semifinalist Montana, where he hauled in nine catches for 206 yards and a score.

If there’s one coach who knows how to utilize Campbell, it’s Marion. Under the former UNLV offensive coordinator’s tutelage, Campbell finished with the nation’s 6th-best PFSN receiving grade a year ago (87.8) while averaging a ridiculous 9.0 yards AFTER the catch per reception.

It’s Campbell’s nasty work after the catch that made him a prized pickup in the portal this offseason, with Marion winning the sweepstakes for his services.

Speed. Elite, track-verified, state-championship-winning speed.

Campbell didn’t earn the nickname “Flash” by accident. He won four consecutive Texas Class 2A 100-meter dash state titles in high school before signing with Texas A&M.

As a freshman with the Aggies, he posted a 10.02-second 100-meter dash at the NCAA West First Round meet, finishing 22nd at the NCAA Outdoor Championships and earning All-American honorable mention — in track, not football.

He redshirted at Texas A&M and transferred to Sacramento State, where Marion immediately put his wheels to use. Now, the Colorado offensive coordinator gets to deploy him against Big 12 competition.

At 5’9″ and 145 pounds, Campbell is undersized. However, that concern diminishes significantly when defenders can’t catch him in the first place. His 20.4 yards per reception would have led Colorado last season.

Fortunately for Buffaloes fans, Campbell isn’t arriving alone. Colorado has assembled what some are calling the “Fun Size Four” at receiver — a quartet of pass-catchers all listed at 5’9″ or shorter.

Kam Perry (Miami of Ohio), Danny Scudero (San Jose State), and Quentin Gibson join Campbell as diminutive speedsters who should thrive in Marion’s scheme.

Deion Sanders Is Adding Weapons for Julian Lewis

Colorado’s receiving corps needed reinforcement after losing Omarion Miller to the portal. Miller, ranked No. 11 on ESPN’s top transfer prospects list, led the Buffaloes in all three receiving categories in 2025 despite inconsistent quarterback play. His departure left a significant hole for Lewis to fill heading into his redshirt freshman campaign.

Joseph Williams returns as the likely top target after flashing chemistry with Lewis during the quarterback’s four-game stint last season. Lewis completed 22-of-35 passes for 299 yards and two touchdowns in his first career start against the West Virginia Mountaineers in 2025.

Adding Campbell gives Lewis a vertical threat who can take the top off defenses and turn short throws into explosive gains, exactly what Marion’s offense demands.

The Buffaloes finished 3-9 in 2025, a season marked by quarterback uncertainty and an inability to replace the production lost when Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter departed for the NFL.

With Lewis entrenched as the starter and Marion orchestrating the offense, the pieces are finally in place for a turnaround.
Campbell’s addition signals Colorado isn’t just reloading; it’s building an offense designed to let its young quarterback push the ball downfield to playmakers who can separate.
