Cade Klubnik Backs Dabo Swinney Publicly as Clemson HC Announces Coaching Change Decision

Cade Klubnik revealed his support for head coach Dabo Swinney as the head coach announced his thoughts on a potential coaching change.

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney and quarterback Cade Klubnik have been searching for answers all season. After entering the year with championship aspirations, the Tigers currently sit at a disappointing 3-4 following a 35-24 loss to the SMU Mustangs. The situation has only grown more complicated with questions swirling around the team’s leadership and on-field performance.

Last week, Klubnik sat out, which led to backup quarterback Christopher Vizzina making his first start of the season. Although Vizzina threw for over 300 yards and three touchdowns, it was not enough to secure a victory. In a rematch of the 2024 ACC Championship Game, the Tigers fell short once again.

Why Is Cade Klubnik Publicly Backing Dabo Swinney?

Despite the team’s struggles, Klubnik has remained steadfast in his support for his head coach. Recently appearing on “Yahoo Sports Daily,” Klubnik opened up about his final season as the Tigers’ quarterback and praised his relationship with Swinney.

“Whatever type of guy you think he is, he is so much better,” Klubnik shared. “The way that he cares for people and loves his players so well. Also, isn’t afraid to tell them the truth. I think that’s something that’s underappreciated right now in College Football.”

This unwavering loyalty comes even as Klubnik’s own performance has been uneven. He has sometimes staggered after being named a Heisman favorite before the season. In six games, the quarterback has completed 65.8% of his passes for 1,530 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Following the loss to SMU, the Tigers was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, according to PFSN’s playoff meter. The team is currently projected to win just five games this season. However, Klubnik continues to defend Swinney’s track record.

“I don’t really care. I came here to win,” Klubnik said. “I haven’t won a Championship, but I have two ACC titles. Coach Swinney has won eight ACC titles in the last ten years, two championships. He keeps winning even when everyone says he hasn’t done it right.”

This perspective is colored by past success. Last year, the quarterback finished with 3,639 passing yards, 36 touchdowns, and six interceptions, helping to lead the Tigers to another ACC title and a CFP appearance. During that season, Swinney helped turn his career around as he entered the final stretch.

Will Swinney Make a Coaching Change Amid Struggles?

With the team’s offense sputtering, questions have turned to potential changes on the coaching staff. During his most recent press conference on Monday, Swinney was asked directly if he would consider making a coaching change to address the team’s failures this season. He quickly shot down that possibility.

“No, we are just trying to get ready and see if we can get everybody doing a better job,” Swinney stated. “That’s all of us, players and coaches. We’ve got good people, and we are going to rally and work our butts off to put a good plan together and see if we can go win the next game.”

Swinney is being scrutinized intensifying because of the Tigers’ apparent stagnation, particularly on offense. The team has not beaten a single power conference opponent in over a year, and the playcalling has been widely questioned as they have dropped to 3-4 overall.

Adding to those problems, the Tigers’ offense ranks as the 245th-best in the country, according to PFSN’s offense impact ratings. Swinney’s system has been heavily pass-oriented, averaging 285 passing yards per game through seven games. Meanwhile, the run game has faltered, averaging only 116 rushing yards per game.

Despite the mounting pressure, Klubnik insists he is not letting the team’s struggles define the end of his career. “I got five more weeks guaranteed of College Football,” the quarterback shared. “I’m going to enjoy it and give it everything I have and continue to fight for these guys and this university.”

Klubnik is set to return for the Tigers’ next game against Duke on Nov. 1 at Memorial Stadium. The Tigers and Blue Devils have a bye week before facing off in 12 days.
