BYU vs. Texas Tech Prediction
Texas Tech is rolling right now with an 8-1 record and is currently ranked in the top 10. Their lone loss came on the road at Arizona State when the Sun Devils were fully healthy and led by QB Sam Leavitt and WR Jordyn Tyson. Other than that, the Red Raiders have easily dismantled their entire schedule, and they’re fresh off an impressive 43-20 win at Kansas State.
Texas Tech is a program usually known for its high-flying and fast-paced offense, but the strength of this team this year is its defense. The Red Raiders boast one of the better defenses in the country while also having an efficient and balanced offense.
BYU sits at 8-0, but has been quite fortunate in multiple games. Quite frankly, this Cougars team should have one or two losses, but they find a way to get themselves out of jams.
At the end of September, BYU traveled to Colorado for a hard-fought game that came down to the final possessions. It was a coin flip game the whole way, with BYU winning 24-21.
Weeks later, the Cougars escaped on the road again, this time against Arizona, in a game that went to double overtime and really could have gone either team’s way.
The last two weeks have been some of the luckiest wins of the season by any team. In the Holy War against Utah, BYU was outgained by 165 total yards. Utah had 7.0 yards per play compared to BYU’s 4.9.
And despite the Cougars pulling out the win 24-21, Utah was much the better team on the field but came up short due to going 0/3 on fourth down conversions, as well as throwing an interception that set up an easy BYU touchdown late in the fourth quarter.
Don’t forget, two weeks ago, the Cougars were extremely fortunate to come away with another road win at Iowa State. Once again, BYU was heavily outgained in total yards, but was able to come away with the win thanks to four Iowa State turnovers (compared to BYU’s zero).
The game was tied late in the third quarter before Iowa State muffed a punt, which gave BYU an easy touchdown. Then the Cyclones threw two back-breaking interceptions in the fourth quarter, one of them being a pick-six.
Overall, BYU is overvalued. And they have struggled mightily on the road this season with close wins at Colorado and Arizona, and a win at Iowa State, where they were outplayed. Lubbock is a crazy atmosphere that will be charged up for a game of this magnitude. Not to mention, Texas Tech will easily be the best offense and defense that the Cougars have seen all season.
Credit to BYU and their coaching staff, who have the Cougars playing a very physical brand of football in the trenches. They have held a major advantage in the offensive and defensive lines in almost every game they’ve played, except against Utah.
The Utes are also known for very tough, physical trenches, and BYU really struggled to gain an edge in that game. Texas Tech is just as tough as BYU, if not more, in the trenches and should be able to control the line of scrimmage.
BYU is about to run into a buzzsaw, and the clock will strike midnight on them in Lubbock since this team’s luck is due to run out. I expect the Red Raiders to control this game in the trenches and with their stout defense.
Lubbock can be a terrifying place to play, and that will be on full display this Saturday. Texas Tech will get a big home win on the way to winning the Big 12 and cementing its spot in the College Football Playoff.
Prediction: Texas Tech 30, BYU 17
