‘That’s Not Fair’ — Bengals Legend Rips Media For Twisting The Knife on Bill Belichick’s Legacy Amid Fresh UNC Scandal

Chad Johnson defends Bill Belichick’s legacy as the UNC investigation widens, arguing staff allegations should not erase his NFL achievements.

Chad Johnson has pushed back against attempts to tie Bill Belichick directly to the latest controversy at North Carolina. The Bengals legend argued that allegations involving members of Belichick’s staff should not erase what the coach achieved during his NFL career.

The comments came after UNC general manager Michael Lombardi resigned Thursday amid the university’s ongoing investigation. The probe reportedly includes allegations involving defensive coordinator Steve Belichick, recruiting staff, and possible relationships within the program.

Chad Johnson Defends Bill Belichick’s Legacy

Speaking on “Nightcap,” Johnson acknowledged that the allegations could affect how people view Belichick. However, he stressed that the reported conduct does not involve Belichick personally.

“Oh Man, this is crazy,” Johnson said. “It’s people that are attached to Coach Belichick. It’s not actually him doing it. So still those people are an extension of him. So that stain, obviously, can it affect his legacy? Yes, in a sense. But what he’s done on the football field, him in general, that’s in a class of its own”

Johnson also argued that critics have repeatedly searched for reasons to challenge Belichick’s reputation. He pointed to controversies such as “Deflategate” and “Spygate,” along with scrutiny surrounding Belichick’s personal life.

“They’re looking for anything to use as a negative,” Johnson said. He added that such issues could become talking points for people who already dislike how Belichick has handled media relationships. He said those critics could use it as evidence and say, “’This is why he wasn’t first ballot (Hall of Famer). This is why we didn’t let him in right away.’”

The latest UNC investigation expanded after Lombardi’s resignation. University officials said the investigation would continue and that they would consider “appropriate corrective action” based on what investigators find.

According to WRAL, investigators are questioning people about whether Steve Belichick used drugs at UNC facilities or provided drugs to a player. The defensive coordinator has been away from the team on medical leave since early August.

The investigation also reportedly examines allegations involving a recruiting staff member and a player. Investigators are separately looking into possible relationships between assistant coaches and recruiting staff.

Johnson acknowledged the difficult position Belichick is facing as head coach.

“That’s not fair,” Johnson said, discussing the responsibility placed on head coaches for staff members. He said, “That’s the part that’s not fair because whoever’s under you, whoever’s on your staff, you’re responsible for their actions even if you don’t know nothing about it.”

The controversy adds another challenge for Belichick as he tries to rebuild UNC. The Tar Heels opened the 2026 season with a 15-10 win over TCU in Dublin after going 4-8 during his first season. According to PFN’s CFB Offense Metric, North Carolina’s offense currently ranks 12th in the nation.

However, amid the controversy, Johnson thinks that the current allegations should remain separate from Belichick’s football achievements. His argument is that accountability within a program matters, but it should not automatically rewrite a coaching legacy built over decades.
