‘What a Corrupt State,’ ‘What Kind of Governor Goes Against SEC Rules?’ — CFB World Rips Gov. Jeff Landry’s Take on LSU, Lane Kiffin Drama

CFB fans call out Gov. Jeff Landry over his LSU defense as Lane Kiffin’s eligibility battle with the SEC intensifies.

The LSU Tigers entered the season surrounded by a legal dispute that has pushed college football’s rules into unfamiliar territory. A Louisiana court ruling gave several players another chance to compete after brief NFL stints, while the SEC moved to challenge the decision.

With LSU and Lane Kiffin at the center, Governor Jeff Landry’s public support has now added another point of debate.

CFB Fans Challenge Jeff Landry Over LSU and Lane Kiffin Dispute

Louisiana’s governor, Landry, backed the players after East Baton Rouge Parish Judge William Jorden issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA and SEC.

The ruling allowed more than 40 athletes to regain college eligibility, including LSU players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, who had previously played for Ole Miss under Lane Kiffin before entering the NFL.

Landry argued that the athletes should not be treated as professional players simply because they briefly pursued NFL opportunities. He celebrated the ruling on Sept. 3, writing, “The court has ruled in favor of the athletes!” He also called for the players to return to action, ending his message with, “Let’s spot the ball!”

The governor’s position immediately drew criticism from parts of the college football community.

One X user took issue with his involvement, writing, “What a corrupt state.”

Analyst Mark Zinno focused instead on the broader legal implications, arguing that the ruling reflects a troubling direction for the justice system.

“All this proves is that our judicial system is moving further away from the law and closer to opinion and emotion,” Zinno wrote. “It’s happening in every facet of life and at every level. We are deteriorating from the inside out. And it’s being supported by elected officials.”

This criticism reflects the larger concern surrounding the dispute. The SEC has argued that allowing former professional athletes to return could undermine competitive fairness, while the conference has taken legal action against LSU.

Eric Sondheimer questioned Landry’s position from another angle. “What kind of governor goes against SEC rules. Louisiana of course,” Sondheimer wrote.

The controversy also follows Kiffin from his previous job at Ole Miss to Baton Rouge. Wright and Harris played for him there before briefly joining NFL teams. After leaving the NFL, both became part of LSU’s roster as Kiffin took over the Tigers.

TBP College Football connected Landry’s support to the political side of the dispute, writing, “The Governor of Louisiana who is congratulating himself on Judge Jorden’s decision. Just in case we didn’t grasp the implication of Politics in this whole affair surrounding the Tigers…”

Graham Coffey offered the most extensive criticism, rejecting the argument that former college players should receive another opportunity. He wrote, “NONE of these fifth year guys should be playing, whether once on NFL rosters or not.”

Coffey added, “Participation trophy culture has infected CFB from the highest levels down and we have nothing but a complete and total lack of leadership on many levels to blame for it.”

The dispute now pits LSU, Kiffin, the SEC, and Louisiana officials against each other over a question that could affect how college eligibility is handled.
