BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier became the first true freshman at his position to start a season opener for the Cougars last year. He led the Cougars on a dominant run that included a Big 12 championship game appearance and a Pop-Tarts Bowl victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Bachmeier is one of the best returning quarterbacks in college football, and his return to Provo next season has vaulted the Cougars to preseason Big 12 favorites, considering the Texas Tech Red Raiders’ QB struggles.
Why Bear Bachmeier Is Climbing the Big 12 Quarterback Rankings
During an appearance on “BYU TV” on Tuesday, CBS Sports analyst Shehan Jeyarajah hyped up Bachmeier and made a huge prediction about the BYU quarterback’s standing in the Big 12.
“I had him at No. 4 in my preseason quarterback ranking about a month ago. I think he slides into the top three right now,” Jeyarajah said. “That top group is pretty open-ended right now. Bear Bachmeier is obviously a tremendous player. I think if you look at the list of quarterbacks right now, Bear Bachmeier is in that top group.
“I have him at No. 3 right now and there’s a very big chance that he continues to move up.”
Last season, Bachmeier tallied 3,033 passing yards on 64.9% completion, resulting in 15 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, while adding 527 rushing yards and 11 scores, earning a PFSN College QB Impact score of 84.2.
Andrew Gentry Reveals BYU’s Respect for Bear Bachmeier
While speaking to reporters earlier this spring, BYU offensive lineman Andrew Gentry revealed how Bachmeier commanded the respect of his teammates despite being a true freshman.
“Just commands the huddle now, not to say that he didn’t do that last year, because for a true freshman,” Gentry said. “He did a phenomenal job of that, but I think now, when you started a full 14 games, you got 14 games under your belt. You come in and there’s just instant respect in the huddle. But then also, to him, he’s mastered the offense now.
“He knows where guys are; it just seems like everything’s happening a little bit quicker, and even that split second in college football makes a huge difference. So seeing him the way that he’s able to make reads, throw the ball, get it out quick. Just put it on the money every single time, too. It’s been really fun to watch.”
Coach Kalani Sitake’s Cougars barely missed out on the College Football Playoff last season, but after signing a new contract amid speculation about his future and the return of Bachmeier, BYU has retooled impressively ahead of a pivotal 2026 season.
