‘Sickening’ — CFB World Reacts As Brendan Sorsby’s Eligibility in Jeopardy Amid Betting Scandal

College football observers had mixed reactions to the revelation that Texas Tech Red Raiders QB Brendan Sorsby has a gambling addiction.

Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby was one of the most coveted prospects in the transfer portal when he opted to depart Cincinnati. Sorsby, who was the No. 2-ranked quarterback and No. 2 overall prospect in the transfer portal, opted to join coach Joey McGuire’s Red Raiders after flirting with coach Lane Kiffin’s LSU.

On Monday, Texas Tech revealed that Sorsby had checked into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction.

College Football World Left in Shock After Brendan Sorsby’s Gambling Addiction Is Revealed

Yahoo Sports reporter Ross Dellenger revealed on X that Sorsby’s college eligibility was under threat after an investigation by the NCAA uncovered his massive gambling issues that were perpetrated via an application.

“The NCAA has been investigating Sorsby for alleged sports wagering as others have reported. His eligibility is in jeopardy depending on the findings and outcome of the investigation,” Dellenger tweeted.

According to ESPN reporter Pete Thamel, Sorsby gambled on Indiana games when he was a freshman at the program in 2022, although none of his bets came in a game in which the quarterback played.

The college football world had mixed reactions to the revelation of the breadth of Sorsby’s gambling problems.

LSU insider Preston Guy was relieved that the Tigers did not win the battle to sign Sorsby and instead pivoted to former Arizona State Sun Devils quarterback Sam Leavitt.

“Sorsby was one of #LSU’s top targets in the portal. LSU landed Sam Leavitt instead,” Guy tweeted.

Chat Sports founder James T. Yoder had a tongue-in-cheek response: “Another Big Ten football scandal. First Michigan State and Iowa vacate entire seasons… Now Indiana players are betting on games. VACATE THE TITLE! I’m proud that Michigan has never had issues like this that result in vacating games. Sickening.”

Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer took a different angle, wondering what this means for Sorsby’s future should he lose his college football eligibility.

“Given that Brendan Sorsby is facing a possible full season loss of eligibility, you wonder if he will consider entering the NFL supplemental draft (if there is one). He did consider the draft prior to leaving Cincinnati. Also of note: Bearcats are suing Sorsby for $1 million related to his exit,” Fischer tweeted.

As Fischer noted, Sorsby is also facing a lawsuit by Cincinnati to the tune of $1 million in liquidated damages after signing an 18-month NIL agreement with the Bearcats, which he breached by entering the transfer portal and joining Texas Tech.

Last season, Sorsby tallied 2,800 passing yards on 61.6% completion, 27 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions, while adding 580 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns to earn an impressive PFSN College QB Impact score of 88.2, which ranked 10th in the country.
