NFL Analyst Makes Bold Prediction on Cam Skattebo in Giants’ Running Back Battle at Training Camp

Can rookie Cam Skattebo leapfrog veterans in the Giants' RB room? Will Tyrone Tracy Jr. hold off the challenge? Training camp just got competitive.

Brian Daboll’s Giants have entered training camp with question marks everywhere. After a brutal 3-14 record in 2024, the front office made big offseason moves to rebuild the roster. But the work isn’t done yet. The Giants’ facility has become a battlefield of position battles. It’s no longer just about Saquon Barkley leaving for Philadelphia.

Now it’s about who can step up and fill the void. From the starting right guard position to the cornerback duo, training camp is packed with competitions. However, one of the most intriguing battles is happening in the running back room. And in that chaos, a fresh name is catching fire.

Can Cam Skattebo Challenge Tyrone Tracy Jr. for the Giants’ Top Running Back Spot?

Cam Skattebo might just crash Tyrone Tracy Jr.’s party, and NFL analyst Jacob Infante is backing the rookie. “Cam Skattebo will be competing with the likes of Tyrone Tracy Jr., Devin Singletary, and Eric Gray for positioning on the New York Giants’ running back depth chart,” Infante wrote.

Infante doubled down on his prediction, adding, “Expect the 216-pound bruiser to impress in training camp.” The prediction carries weight when you look at Skattebo’s college resume. At Arizona State, he was a nightmare for opposing defenses.

The numbers back up Infante’s confidence. In 2024, Skattebo rushed for 1,711 yards, racked up 605 receiving yards, and scored 24 total touchdowns.

His postseason performance was even better, putting up 271 yards at the Peach Bowl and earning Offensive MVP honors despite Arizona State’s loss.

Skattebo’s college career reached historic levels. He finished fifth in Heisman voting, broke ASU’s single-season rushing record, and became the first Sun Devil ever to cross 2,000 scrimmage yards in a season. So Infante isn’t wrong in ranking him so highly.

While Skattebo’s pass-blocking may still need work, his short-yardage game and dual-threat ability can’t be ignored. But here’s the challenge: he’s not competing against scrubs.

Why Is Tyrone Tracy Jr. Still the Favorite to Lead New York’s Backfield?

Tyrone Tracy Jr. is already a fan favorite in New York. The second-year back exploded during his rookie season after switching from wide receiver to running back in college. He finished 2024 with over 1,000 scrimmage yards and made the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Tracy brings speed and fearlessness to the position.

Despite the overtime fumble against Carolina, Tracy made quite the comeback and has already won Brian Daboll’s trust. Meanwhile, Devin Singletary is also in the mix. Once viewed as the veteran anchor of the group, Singletary saw his role shrink during the 2024 campaign.

Singletary posted a 3.9 yards-per-carry average, and his future with the team is anything but certain. If Skattebo shows up in pads like he dominated on college tape, both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots could be out of reach for Singletary.

Infante sees the bigger picture with Skattebo. The rookie is more than just a bruiser. “If his time at Arizona State showed anything, it’s that he fights hard for every opportunity he gets,” Infante said. The Giants desperately need that mentality. Skattebo could become a short-yardage weapon and key piece in Daboll’s offensive system.

If Skattebo holds his own in pass protection and stays consistent through preseason, the Giants’ backfield hierarchy might look completely different. In a post-Barkley world, New York doesn’t just want a backfield that functions. They need one that wins games.
