Bill Belichick is one of the most accomplished coaches in NFL history, but he has yet to achieve the same level of success in college football. He currently remains the head coach of the North Carolina Tar Heels entering the 2026 season, though he recently commented on a potential return to the pros.
Bill Belichick Responds to Being Asked About a Potential Return to the NFL
Belichick holds many career records as an NFL coach, including eight Super Bowl rings, six of which came during his dynastic run as head coach of the New England Patriots. He and the franchise parted ways after an iconic partnership that lasted more than two decades, leading to his move to the Tar Heels to take on a college coaching role.
His legendary status and reputation haven’t exactly translated into success in the collegiate ranks so far.
Belichick’s first season was massively disappointing, as he turned in a 4-8 overall record and only two wins in eight ACC games. This has sparked rumors that he may be considering a return to the NFL, a question he was recently asked about.

“I’m focused on UNC right now, absolutely,” responded Belichick. “I’ve recruited these kids, two years with them, been with these guys. I want to help them. I had a great experience in the NFL, but I’m very happy at North Carolina. I’m excited to be there. Excited about the future of our program.”
Belichick, in Ireland, asked if he sees himself returning to the NFL:

Belichick has two guaranteed years remaining on his five-year contract with the Tar Heels, so while his deal runs through the 2029 season, the guaranteed portion expires following the 2027 season. This gives the university some options to exit the deal early if Belichick doesn’t perform to their standards.

For now, at least, the head coach has been consistent in expressing his enthusiasm for being in this current position and remains optimistic about his team’s chances of competing. They will need to take a significant step forward if they are going to do so, as they were a non-factor in the ACC last season.
This is unfamiliar territory for the legendary NFL head coach, especially when looking at his insane run with the Patriots. This includes making the playoffs 18 times in 24 seasons, racking up six Super Bowl rings and nine AFC Championships along the way.
Belichick’s Patriots also ranked among the top five teams in PFN’s Impact Rankings 14 times, so if he were to return to the NFL, he would likely be a desirable target for several teams.
