The controversy surrounding Mike Vrabel and Dianna Russini continues to dominate NFL discourse, even as the 2026 NFL Draft approaches. While Vrabel addressed the situation briefly, reactions across the league remain divided.
One of the most outspoken voices has been former NFL MVP Cam Newton. Speaking on his podcast, Newton didn’t hold back in questioning how the situation has been handled, which reignited discussions around double standards within the league.
Cam Newton Calls Out Double Standards in Mike Vrabel-Dianna Russini Controversy
During the latest episode of his podcast “4th&1,” Newton dissected Vrabel’s comments to the media about the controversy. He was frustrated that Vrabel didn’t say anything of substance, and added that the timing of this press conference felt calculated.
“It wasn’t nothing even exposed! We didn’t find nothing out! [He said], ‘Yeah, I just didn’t want to be a distraction.’ Ha! Captain obvious here. Hey, coach, it’s already been a distraction!” Newton said. “The timeliness of it, though, was extremely strategic. It’s Tuesday. What’s going to be an even bigger story by the week’s end? The draft! Hello!”
Newton criticized how Vrabel and the Patriots addressed the scandal, arguing that they purposely waited until just before the draft to ensure that this went away quickly after Thursday’s first round.
Newton then wondered how a player would be treated if he was in this same situation.
“Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, dogs and cats… somebody gotta speak for the players. Because if this was a player, I’m having a hard time understanding if they’d get that same grace,” Newton said. “Hey, if you’re a player, it might not be disciplinary situations from the team, but let Patrick Mahomes find out that he had an infidelity issue [and see what happens]! Let that be the situation.
“I’m having a hard time understanding this. I love Mike Vrabel; do not get that twisted or misconstrued. But sometimes we shift the focus for certain people. … Vrabel got grace a player would never get!”
Newton also noted that Vrabel’s job is safe, while Russini ultimately stepped down from her role at The Athletic amid the growing controversy.
Newton also pointed out that other coaches who got caught in infidelity issues often lost their jobs, including Urban Meyer, Sherrone Moore, and Rick Pitino among others.
“We ain’t holding coaches to the same standard,” Newton said.
Even with the 2026 NFL Draft around the corner, the controversy shows no signs of fading. Newton’s comments have added fuel to an already intense flame.
