‘He Threw Dianna Russini Under the Bus’ — Ex-NFL LB Makes Feelings Clear on Mike Vrabel Addressing Scandal

Mike Vrabel addressed the Dianna Russini controversy, and one ex-NFL player argues that the Patriots head coach threw her under the bus.

The 2026 NFL Draft is almost here, but one of the biggest storylines in the NFL centers around New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and insider Dianna Russini. After pictures of the two surfaced online, Russini resigned from The Athletic.

On Tuesday, Vrabel addressed the media and discussed the scandal for the first time. Many took issue with his vague comments, and a former NFL linebacker believes he threw Russini under the bus.

Mike Vrabel’s Response to Dianna Russini Controversy Draws Strong Reaction From Emmanuel Acho

After pictures circulated on social media of Vrabel and the NFL reporter at a hotel in Arizona, speculation about the nature of their relationship arose. As a result, Russini decided to step down from her position at The Athletic.

Now, reports indicate that her work is under review, while questions have also emerged about her involvement in NFL awards voting. While the three-time Super Bowl champion tried to portray the incident as nothing serious initially, his press conference on Tuesday was different.

“I’ve had some difficult conversations with people that I care about, with my family, the organization, the coaches, the players. Those have been positive and productive,” Vrabel said.

“We believe that in order to be successful on and off the field, you have to make good decisions,” he added. “That includes me, that starts with me. We never want our actions to negatively affect the team. We never want to be the cause of a distraction.”

Still, he refused to directly acknowledge what happened, or name Russini. As the broader NFL world reacted to Vrabel’s comments, Philadelphia Eagles linebacker turned analyst Emmanuel Acho had a different reaction. On the “Speakeasy,” he broke down his biggest issue with the press conference from the two-time Coach of the Year award winner.

“Vrabel handled it as well as he could handle it. But in handling it as well as he could handle it, of course, he threw Dianna Russini under the bus,” Acho proclaimed. His evidence came in the form of one specific line from Vrabel.

“The moment he said, ‘I’ve had some difficult conversations with people I care about,’ that implies Dianna Russini wasn’t just on a girls’ trip. That’s the implication. Because if Dianna Russini was just on a girls’ trip, and Mike Vrabel, you were just at the hotel, and y’all just happened to run into each other coincidentally, what’s the difficult conversation?”

Acho argued that a “difficult conversation” would only need to take place if Russini’s version of events didn’t happen and something more was going on.

Two-time Super Bowl champion LeSean McCoy pushed back on Acho’s take, arguing that Vrabel could regret putting himself in a situation where there were bad optics and it even looked like he was cheating on his wife, as that creates drama and a lot of distractions and “difficult conversations” in his life.

Overall, Acho was complimentary about Vrabel’s press conference.

“I love how Mike Vrabel handled it. He’s handled it about as seamlessly as you can,” Acho added. “He said as little as possible and no less.”

For the time being, this story is going to continue to loom over New England even as they enter the 2026 NFL Draft.

But now that Vrabel has addressed his team and the media, the story will likely begin to die down between now and when the 2026 NFL season rolls around.
