Calls Mount for Bills to ‘Fire Sean McDermott’ After ‘Inexcusable’ Loss vs. Broncos

The NFL world rained down a flood of reactions toward Bills HC Sean McDermott after his team lost to Denver 33-30 in AFC Divisional Round.

The Buffalo Bills fought hard on Saturday night, taking the Denver Broncos into overtime before a Will Lutz field goal gave the Broncos a 33-30 win at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. The loss sent many wondering about the future of head coach Sean McDermott.

McDermott has spent much of his time in the NFL world on the defensive side of the ball. But the Bills’ defense could not stop Broncos quarterback Bo Nix and the Denver offense late in the game, which included two key pass interference calls in overtime.

NFL World Shares Thoughts on Bills HC Sean McDermott

NFL writer and insider John Frascella had some comments on the Bills’ game, including pointed comments about McDermott.

“WHEN ARE THE BILLS GONNA FIRE SEAN MCDERMOTT Every year, same thing, guys wide open in the clutch against his D”, Frascella wrote.

Jon Still, who co-hosts “Melnick in the Afternoon” on TSN 690 Montreal, posted on X, “You can always count on Sean McDermott’s defence to crumble in the biggest moments”. Chris Torello, former sports reporter for Bay Area 9, was more pointed in his comments on X.

“You have to fire Sean McDermott,” Torello wrote. “You have to. You have to signal to your fans not getting to the Super Bowl without the big name QBs in your way is inexcusable. #BillsMafia”. Destin Adams, Colts beat writer and NFL draft analyst for A to Z Sports, wrote on X, “If I were the Bills I’d fire Sean McDermott”.

According to the PFSN NFL Offense Impact Metric, which is measured through the regular season, the Bills’ offense under McDermott had an impact score of 86.5 and graded out to a B. In the eight previous seasons with McDermott as head coach, the Bills’ offense impact grade went from a D+ in 2017 to a B in 2024.

Meanwhile, according to the PFSN NFL Defense Impact Metric, the Bills’ defense had an impact score of 78.0 and graded out to a C+. In the previous eight seasons under McDermott, the Buffalo defense’s grade ranged from a B to a C+.

Ari Meirov, who covers the NFL for The 33rd Team, shared an interesting statistic about the Bills on X.

Jim Rome, host of “The Jim Rome Show” on X and Prime Video, had some thoughts after watching the Bills lose to the Broncos. Rome wrote on X, “Coach ’em the hell up, Sean McDermott, like your job depends on it. Because it probably does.”

Adam Schein, who hosts “Schein on Sports” on Mad Dog Sports Radio on SiriusXM, posted on X, “Terrible mistake by Allen at the end of the half. But… take a knee! And McDermott’s explanation of his thinking to Tracy was sheer insanity.” Schein refers to a conversation McDermott had on the field with CBS Sports sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson.

Needless to say, the NFL world will be watching to see what happens with McDermott as the Bills’ offseason is now underway after losing to Denver in overtime.

I agree with you on almost all of your points; however, the only real and accepted definition of insanity is “THE CLEVELAND BROWNS”.

2 options: 1) Fire Beane, give Mcdermott and staff 1 more year. 2) Fire Beane, McDermott and staff. Bold actions, and very sad, but necessary. Otherwise, the Josh Allen window will close 5 years from now, with no Bills championships.

Bean didn’t make the calls that cost them the game against Philly. McDermott should be fired for that alone……..

Bills ownership is the problem. You can’t blame an incompetent Sean McDermott and GM if the owner is too brain dead to acknowledge what everyone else knows. The definition of insanity is constantly doing the same thing over again expecting a different result. Plus, 13 SECONDS. The owner of the Bills must drink the same water as the owner of the Cowboys.
