The relationship between NFL players and local media can vary. Now, with sustained franchise struggles, the connection could change. After his first year with the Cleveland Browns, quarterback Shedeur Sanders became the eventual starter. A family member’s remark in response to a veteran’s answer, and the ensuing back-and-forth, captured attention.

Last summer, the Cleveland Browns boasted a quarterback room of Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel, and Sanders. Not to mention, Deshaun Watson was rehabbing from a second torn Achilles tendon. Sanders outlasted the rest, ending the season as the starter.
Cabot, a beat writer for Cleveland.com, mentioned via social media that she believes Watson should start. Shilo, Shedeur’s brother, told Cabot to “go make a sandwich” in the replies. Cabot joined “92.3 The Fan” to offer her response.
“I really do believe that I’ve been an inspiration for lots of women and young girls to know that you can go out there and do a good job in a man’s world, and take all of that that comes with that,” Cabot said.
“I know so many women who have joined the football world especially because of some of the things I’ve been able to do over the years, I’m happy about that.”

“I know that there are so many women who have joined the football world, especially because of some of the things I’ve been able to do over the years… and I’m just happy about that I have been able to help set the tone and open some doors in that way,” Cabot added.
Cabot started covering the Browns in 1988, four years removed from graduating from Kent State. She grew up in Northeast Ohio. Additionally, her nearly 40 years with the team provide her with a different perspective.
As Shilo’s comments went viral on social media, condemnation of the elder brother of Sanders increased. For instance, fellow NFL reporter Rick Stroud offered this rebuttal:
One of these folks is already honored in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The other is Shilo Sanders. https://t.co/ytSA0FEO1T

Meanwhile, the Sanders brother, who plays quarterback for the Browns, faces another battle. Cleveland drafted Taylen Green, a quarterback from Arkansas.
Green’s style of play, mixed with his speed, aligns with what new head coach Todd Monken wants to accomplish. Monken ran the Baltimore Ravens offense, crafting a scheme around Lamar Jackson’s athletic attributes. After multiple injuries to his lower body, no one knows what that portends for Watson’s future.

By nature and approach, Sanders plays the role of a drop-back passer rather than a pocket mover. Green, based on his substantial tools, could loosen Sanders’ grip on the backup job behind Watson.
Moreover, due to his brother’s comments, how does this affect Cabot’s and the Browns’ quarterbacks’ future interactions? Either way, the Browns need the signal-caller who can elevate the team from the No. 32 spot in the PFSN NFL Offense Impact Rankings. Can Sanders outperform Watson to get the job?
