Brock Purdy Injury Update: What’s the Latest on the 49ers Star, and Will He Play in Week 10?

The San Francisco 49ers made zero moves at the NFL trade deadline. Leaving fans wondering about the health of Brock Purdy.

When the NFL trade deadline passed, the San Francisco 49ers decided to stand pat, making no moves and turning all eyes toward the players already on their roster. The decision left many 49ers fans feeling a bit short-stacked, yet the team continues to win with a backup quarterback, creating a fascinating dilemma as they look toward Week 10.

What Is the Latest on Brock Purdy’s Turf Toe Injury?

Speculation is swirling about Brock Purdy’s availability for the 49ers’ Week 10 matchup against the division rival Los Angeles Rams this Sunday. A return to one of the NFL’s most efficient quarterbacks could be exactly what the team needs, but few injuries are as deceptive and frustrating as turf toe.

Purdy’s injury, initially suffered in Week 1, was expected to keep him out for two to five weeks. However, an aggravation in Week 4 has kept him off the field for four consecutive games.

Head Coach Kyle Shanahan has consistently framed the quarterback’s recovery as a day-to-day challenge, emphasizing the risk of a setback. His approach has been cautious, with Purdy logging incremental increases in practice reps but remaining officially “questionable.”

As recently as last Friday, Shanahan declared that Purdy wasn’t a “long shot” for Week 9, but the quarterback ultimately did not dress for the game.

Why Would the 49ers Replace a Winning Mac Jones?

While Purdy has been sidelined, Mac Jones stepped up, and the 49ers have continued to win. San Francisco now holds a 6-3 record and all key playoff tie-breakers, which is not bad for a team that, on paper, seems to lack enough firepower. With zero activity at the trade deadline, the team’s postseason hopes are seemingly riding on a “next man up” mentality.

Still, Purdy’s statistical efficiency remains notable. His 65.8% completion rate, four touchdowns, and four interceptions in limited action this season are solid, and his 2024 QB impact rating of 85.5 outshines Jones’ current rating of 78.6. The smart money is on a healthy Purdy to run Shanahan’s timing-based offense more effectively. Until Jones falters, however, the 49er Faithful will likely remain faithful to the hot hand.

Looking ahead, the 49ers remain noncommittal on Purdy’s starting status for Week 10. Multiple reports confirm he will practice in a limited capacity and could dress, but he is doubtful to start. The most likely scenario is that Jones will start against the Rams, with Purdy available for emergency duty only. For 49ers fans, it is just another week of waiting.
