The San Francisco 49ers didn’t suffer from the absence of quarterback Brock Purdy this weekend. Mac Jones once again filled in for the injured Purdy and drove the Niners to a solid win over the New York Giants in East Rutherford.
After a level first quarter, Jones and company took a 17-7 lead into the halftime locker and never looked back, going home with a 34-24 victory. The former New England Patriots shot-caller looked so good that fans bashed San Francisco’s actual starter, Purdy.

Brock Purdy Faces Fan Criticism After 49ers Have No Trouble Winning With Mac Jones
Jones played one of his most solid games to date in Week 9, throwing for 235 yards and two touchdowns, which included a 79.2 pass completion percentage. His 135.2 QBR marked one of the best performances of the weekend.
Jones’s outing saw him earn a lot of fan support on X.
Anderius compared the two quarterbacks in a tweet, writing:
“Mac Jones success with the 49ers is clear evidence that Brock Purdy is a system QB… If you are in a situation with multiple weapons, and good coaching, you are more likely to succeed, plain and simple. Jones has a similar play style to Purdy, pretty (or purdy) interchangeable.”

Sly Bri highlighted a possible situation within the 49ers organization:
“I wonder how much the 49ers regret giving system QB Brock Purdy the bag when Mac Jones is the same QB and is honestly better because he doesn’t throw laughably bad interceptions.”
Another user called for Jones to become the Niners’ permanent starter, tweeting:
“Trade Brock Purdy! Give me Mac Jones for life. DUDE IS SO DAMN TOUGH!”
One user highlighted Jones’s strong qualities over Purdy’s, writing:
“Mac Jones actually lifts and carries this team. Brock Purdy can’t do that.”
Another user added to the sentiment that Jones is better than San Francisco’s primary starter, tweeting:
“Brock Purdy might not be better than Mac Jones.”

It’ll be interesting to see how head coach Kyle Shanahan moves forward with Jones and Purdy. While Purdy (toe) is expected to be healthy for the Niners’ Week 10 matchup with the LA Rams, Jones’ performance has many backing him to become San Francisco’s full-time starter.
Purdy has put up big numbers in the two games he’s played so far this campaign, but, unfortunately, those big numbers have also appeared in the interceptions column. In the two games he played, he threw a total of four picks and four touchdowns.
Jones, on the other hand, has a better stat line of 10 scores to five picks. He is ranked 15th in PFSN’s Quarterback Impact metric.
