The Dallas Cowboys have a rather unfortunate situation on their hands at the running back position. Last year, the loss of Tony Pollard was a move that was widely criticized across the league. Over the first half of the season, it became clear that the franchise’s decision was wrong. This offseason, owner and general manager Jerry Jones made a lot of moves to fix that problem, potentially.
However, none of their moves inspired enough confidence for the offense to truly become dynamic in the 2025 season. Neither Miles Sanders nor Javonte Williams seemed like smart bets in 2025, whereas fifth-round pick Jaydon Blue was a relative unknown. But the latest updates from head coach Brian Schottenheimer seem to suggest that the Cowboys may have fixed their running back problems with a smash-hit success in the form of Blue.
Brian Schottenheimer Believes Jaydon Blue Is the Cure for Dallas Cowboys Rushing Woes
A three-year career at Texas saw Blue put forward an impressive game tape for scouts to monitor. The Longhorns leaned heavily on their passing game, leading to Blue’s overall numbers being relatively pedestrian compared to his competition.
Over the 2023-2024 seasons, he tallied 1,128 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground. However, his versatility was a real asset as well, as he added 368 yards and six touchdowns through the air in his final year at Texas.
Through his first offseason as an NFL member, he’s already shattering those expectations. As the NFL preseason comes right around the corner, the rookie is already making waves in training camp.
Already, he’s made a fan out of Schottenheimer, who had some high praise while speaking to reporters on the “Inside Training Camp Live” program on the NFL website. “The quickness and ability to accelerate into the hole, it’s just different. He’s got incredible lateral agility and quickness.”
That’s when we went a step further in his compliments. His comparison for the rookie was one of the most productive running backs of the 21st century. “He reminds me of a larger version of Darren Sproles. I don’t use that lightly.”

A fourth-round pick himself, Sproles earned three Pro Bowl selections and won Super Bowl 52 with the Philadelphia Eagles. A perennially excellent threat on all three levels, he holds the record for most all-purpose yards in a season with 2,696 in the 2011 season.
That is an incredibly high standard that Dallas’ head coach has set for the youngster to achieve. However, if he is as good as Schottenheimer has advertised, then the Cowboys might not have to worry about their run game for the foreseeable future.
