Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been the story of the NFL offseason in the past two weeks after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence 11 days ago. Romo, who received three citations from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office after the incident, was placed on leave by CBS Sports last Friday.
Analyst Makes Grim Tony Romo Prediction
During Monday’s segment of the “Dan Le Batard” show, analyst Dan Le Batard predicted that being placed on leave by CBS Sports might signal the end of Romo’s broadcasting career with the network.
“You are symbolically, and in actuality, you are a face and a voice for the league that has been pulled over on the side of the street, and with that comes a responsibility I would say that puts your job in jeopardy more than if you’re merely the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys,” Le Batard said. “If you’re the quarterback of the Cowboys, you can survive a DUI or OWI.
“If you’re the face and the voice for the league on a preeminent broadcast and they’re already unhappy with you for a number of reasons, this might be the beginning of the end of Tony Romo and one of America’s premier broadcast teams, and I assume that contractually they might be able to fire him for cause and get out from under that money.”
Le Batard added, “My guess is that the delay in all of this and putting him on leave is at least in part so that they figure out what they wanna do because the only thing that saves or eliminates Tony Romo’s job right now is if his bosses were happy with him before this happened.

Romo entered the league in 2003 as an undrafted free agent and spent his entire 14-year career with the Dallas Cowboys.

After retiring in 2017, Romo was hired by CBS Sports to replace Phil Simms as the lead color analyst for the NFL telecasts, working alongside Jim Nantz. He carved out a niche for himself with his accurate play predictions.
In 2020, the former Cowboys QB was rewarded with a bumper 10-year, $180 million contract extension by CBS after ESPN expressed an interest in his services. Romo has four years and $72 million remaining on his contract, and several analysts have speculated that CBS could explore a morals clause to get out of the massive financial obligation to the former Cowboys standout.
The network reportedly staged an intervention in 2023 over the former NFL quarterback’s declining commentary, which was influenced by poor preparation habits. CBS elevated NFL icon J.J. Watt to fill Romo’s position alongside Nantz after the former quarterback’s arrest.
