Just when it seemed the controversy surrounding Dianna Russini might be fading, another leak has thrust the former NFL insider back into the spotlight, this time over bodycam footage from a traffic stop that is raising fresh questions about her source relationship with Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell.
The footage has renewed scrutiny of Russini’s reporting on the Vikings and prompted speculation about whether her relationship with O’Connell may have influenced some of her coverage.
Dianna Russini and Kevin O’Connell Face Fresh Scrutiny After Bodycam Footage Surfaces
Adam Herbets of The Center Square obtained and published bodycam footage from Russini’s January traffic stop. The timestamp shows the incident occurred on January 19, the same day the Buffalo Bills fired head coach Sean McDermott.
In the footage, Russini is stopped for using her phone while driving. She tells the officer she is an NFL reporter and explains she was on the phone because of the McDermott news. During the conversation, she asks the officer about his favorite NFL team. After he says the Vikings, Russini shows him text messages with O’Connell.
While referencing a relationship with an NFL head coach in an attempt to avoid a ticket has drawn attention on its own, another comment has generated even more discussion. At one point, Russini tells the officer that the Vikings’ “quarterback sucks.”
There is nothing inherently improper about expressing a personal opinion. However, in light of her reporting on the Vikings over the past two seasons, the footage has fueled additional debate.

Last offseason, Russini frequently reported on the Vikings’ interest in Aaron Rodgers. Although the move never materialized, NFL writer and lead NFL editor for FanSided, Adam Patrick, has speculated that O’Connell may have supported pursuing Rodgers before the idea was ultimately rejected by then-general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.
Patrick posted on his X handle, “This confirms that Kevin O’Connell was a source of Diana Russini’s and likely the one who fed her the info about Aaron Rodgers before last season…a move KOC likely wanted to happen and got shut down by Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.”
When J.J. McCarthy struggled during the 2025 season, throwing 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, Adofo-Mensah was dismissed. Russini was among the first to report the news, initially suggesting his paternity leave had factored into the decision before later clarifying her reporting.

Patrick has since speculated that O’Connell may have been one of Russini’s sources regarding Adofo-Mensah and that he could have later contacted her after aspects of the story drew criticism.
In a separate post, Patrick wrote, “KOC definitely complained to her about Kwesi’s paternity leave too and then texted her to clear things up after she put it in the Kwesi firing story.”
NFL Draft analyst for Fantasy Life, Thor Nystrom, had similar comments. He noted on his X handle, “Dianna Russini broke Kwesi’s firing. With a paternity leave anecdote she walked back after backlash, clarifying Vikings were supportive. Last spring she pushed Rodgers to MN while trashing a 22-year-old who hadnt taken a snap. She had a goldmine Vikings source. Any guesses?”
There is no public evidence confirming that O’Connell served as Russini’s source. Even so, the newly released footage has prompted renewed discussion about whether their relationship created the appearance of a conflict of interest in her Vikings coverage.
The situation has also drawn renewed attention to Russini’s comments from February, when she reported that O’Connell did not have final authority over roster decisions. Following McCarthy’s disappointing season, Minnesota later signed former Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, adding another experienced option to compete for the starting job.
Russini has since resigned from The Athletic, which continues to conduct an internal investigation into her journalistic conduct. The latest footage is unlikely to quiet the debate surrounding her reporting anytime soon and may even strain the relationship between McCarthy and O’Connell.
