Former NFL HC Flatly Dismisses Josh Allen–Led Bills’ Chances of Making the Super Bowl

One former NFL head coach dismisses the Bills’ Super Bowl hopes, pointing to Josh Allen’s road playoff record and Buffalo’s uphill battle.

The Buffalo Bills were defeated 13-12 by the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. This loss dropped Buffalo to 11-5, meaning the New England Patriots are officially AFC East Champions again. As a result, the Bills now need to go on the road and win three playoff games to reach the Super Bowl. Although that isn’t out of the realm of possibility, one former NFL head coach doesn’t believe their chances of achieving this are high.

Why Doesn’t Rex Ryan Believe in the Bills’ Super Bowl Chances After Saturday’s Loss?

On Monday morning’s episode of “Get Up,” Rex Ryan shared his thoughts on how the Bills played on Saturday and their Super Bowl chances. He said,” I was actually encouraged by what I saw from their defense yesterday. Which sounds crazy. But why? Because it looked like they stopped the run.”

Ryan added, “And their Achilles heel has been stopping the run. Look, do I think they will? No, I don’t, I think winning three games on the road is so hard to do. And the next road game that Josh Allen wins in the playoffs will be his first.”

Ryan’s assessment of Buffalo’s chances of making the Super Bowl would be fair in a normal year. As he mentioned, the Bills have yet to win in a playoff game on the road with Josh Allen. However, this year it’s a completely different scenario. Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Lamar Jackson (maybe) won’t be in the playoffs.

Consequently, the means Allen is the most well-established and possibly the most talented quarterback left in the AFC. So, even though they have to win three road games, Allen will more than likely be the best QB on the field in all those games. Even so, Buffalo’s struggling receiving corps will make it tough for Allen to put the team on his back.

Entering Week 18, the Bills sit as the AFC’s seventh seed, which means they would travel to New England for another matchup wth the Patriots. The Bills were able to pull off a come-from-behind victory in Week 15 at Foxborough. That said, Buffalo could end up with the fifth or sixth seed depending on results in Week 18.

If Buffalo stays as the seventh seed and wins, it will have to face the Denver Broncos in the divisional round. That will be a tough matchup for Allen and the Bills, given the strength of the Broncos’ defense. According to PFSN’s defensive impact metric, Denver has the second-best defense in the NFL with an impact score of 89.2.

While the Bills will have a tough road to the Super Bowl, this may be their best chance to seize a championship with Allen.
