The Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel scandal was arguably the biggest story of the NFL offseason. With fans watching with bated breath, more details kept emerging about the two, leading to some major repercussions for the pair.
For the veteran reporter, it meant stepping down from her role at The Athletic. Since then, she has been AWOL from media circles.
However, a return could conceivably be right around the corner, albeit in a far different role than the one she previously had.
Dianna Russini Embarking on New Career Trajectory?
The Athletic confirmed that it would undertake a thorough investigation into the work she did for the publication. Working with the company since 2023, she had become one of the most recognizable insiders on the platform.
The Athletic’s nearly five-month-long probe found her personal relationship with Vrabel was in clear violation of company standards. The publication also noted that Russini should have disclosed the nature of her relationship with the Patriots head coach
The investigation did not reveal any major wrongdoing on her part as it pertained to her journalistic integrity and biases towards Vrabel and the New England Patriots. Soon after, a potential opening also revealed itself.
Front Office Sports revealed that Barstool Sports was open to the possibility of bringing Russini on board. Dave Portnoy has reportedly already expressed his interest, and with a working relationship with PFT Commenter and Dan Katz, the partnership already had some groundwork.

Unfortunately, the news wasn’t met with universal praise. While some certainly understood the appeal of the new direction, others were firmly against the idea.

“Would be so embarrassing for everyone involved,” one fan commented.
For some, the choice was inevitable, as they claimed, “Least surprising move ever.” For a large section of the fan base, though, Russini joining Barstool seemed like a “slam dunk.”

As one fan claimed, “This would be elite. She is cool and funny, and no one is really offended,” it seemed clear that a lot of fans were open to the idea as well.
While the Vrabel scandal painted her in an extremely negative light, a large section of the fan base was open to a return for the veteran insider.
It remains to be seen if the move to Barstool actually comes true. But the initial verdict is leaning towards the potential new beginning being a net positive for Russini.
