The Jacksonville Jaguars are off to a strong 3-1 start this season, and a big reason why is their running game. Travis Etienne Jr. has been the star, averaging nearly 100 yards per game and putting on a 124-yard performance against the 49ers in Week 4.
Under new head coach Liam Coen, the Jaguars have leaned on a physical, ground-and-pound style that’s helped them create big plays and keep defenses on their toes.
Bhayshul Tuten Making Waves for Jacksonville; Injury Concerns Arise
But depth is important, and that’s where Bhayshul Tuten comes in. The Jaguars’ backup running back has been dealing with a shoulder injury over the past few weeks. While he’s been able to play through it, his practice time has been limited, and his status for Week 5 against the Chiefs is still uncertain.
According to ESPN’s Michael DiRocco, on Thursday, Tuten was limited in practice and wore a non-contact jersey. It’s a cautious move as he manages the shoulder, but it doesn’t mean he won’t play.
DiRocco wrote on X, “Jaguars DE Travon Walker (wrist) not spotted at practice during open media portion. WR Dyami Brown, S Eric Murray, RB Bhayshul Tuten, LG Ezra Cleveland in red non-contact jerseys. LB Yasir Abdullah working off to the side.”

In fact, Tuten has already shown he can handle the injury; he was cleared to play in Week 4 against the 49ers after being a full participant in practice. With an extra day before Monday night’s game, there’s still a chance he could get more work in and be ready.
The Expectations that Tuten Brings Learning Behind Travis Etienne Jr.
The Jaguars’ backfield benefits from Tuten’s unique contribution. Quick and resilient, he can convert any carry into a possible big run. During his time in college, he made waves by first breaking records at North Carolina A&T and then succeeding at Virginia Tech. Tuten has 21 carries for 88 yards and a touchdown so far this season, taking notes from Etienne while he waits for his chance to lead.
Tuten still needs to work on areas like ball security, reading defenses, and pass protection, but his upside is clear. He’s the kind of player who can change a game if he gets the chance, and the Jaguars will need that depth if they want to keep rolling through the season. The team has an Offense Impact score of 78.2 and is graded C+ by PFSN’s Offense Impact (OFFi).
Even if Tuten doesn’t see a heavy workload in Week 5, just having him available gives the Jaguars flexibility. His presence allows Etienne to stay fresh for key moments, and the coaching staff can design plays that take advantage of Tuten’s speed and big-play ability.
It also sends a message to the rest of the roster: injuries don’t have to derail the team if backups like Tuten are ready to step in. As the season progresses, his development could be crucial in keeping the Jaguars’ offense balanced and explosive.
