Bears QB Caleb Williams Addresses ‘Iceman’ Trademark Dispute With NBA Legend George Gervin

Caleb Williams talked about his conflict with NBA legend George Gervin after the Bears quarterback filed a trademark for the 'Iceman' nickname.

The Chicago Bears finally have a franchise quarterback, and Caleb Williams wants to officially own the “Iceman” moniker. However, NBA Hall of Famer George Gervin refuses to let his legendary nickname go without a fight.

The dispute began last month when Williams filed multiple applications to register the “Iceman” trademark for apparel, sports equipment, and digital trading cards. Four days later, Gervin filed his own applications, pointing out that he has been the original Iceman since his high-scoring days with the San Antonio Spurs in the late 1970s.

Caleb Williams Talks About His Decision To Trademark ‘Icemam’

Gervin told reporters he was caught off guard, reminding the young quarterback that the sports world already has an Iceman. Media personalities jumped into the fray, with Skip Bayless accusing the Bears star of trying to steal the title.

Williams did not take the criticism lying down. The 24-year-old fired back on X, posting the dictionary definition of the word “steal” and telling Bayless he was just handling his business.

Williams made it clear the legal move was not a sign of disrespect toward Gervin. He simply wants to control the merchandise being churned out with his face and his new nickname.

“It’s funny because I didn’t know, my dad probably knows his [Gervin] nickname was that,” Williams told Front Office Sports. “But between me and George or anything like that, it’s more or less people making clothing or people making things like that, and I can’t control what people are making of me or anything like that, and putting the name on it. And so it’s just to control that aspect of it. And that was the main reason of doing it.”

“It’s all respect to George,” Williams added. “I didn’t know personally, and I understand, you know, maybe what he’s trying to do. We haven’t talked, him and I, and we may talk at some point, but it was nothing between George and I.”

“It’s the right nickname, and so, I think it fits, you know, Chicago’s friggin’ frigid for many, many months out of the year,” Williams continued. “I think it fits. My teammates started calling me it, and it festered into a whole thing, whether it’s social media or the media side of it, and obviously it started with my teammates.”

You do not get called the Iceman in the NFL without putting up the numbers to back it up. Williams did exactly that during a breakout 2025 campaign, throwing for nearly 4,000 yards and 27 touchdowns while leading Chicago to an 11-6 record. According to PFSN’s Offense Impact Metric, the Bears had the 10th-best offense in the league last season, and their quarterback was a huge reason behind it.

Williams led the league with six fourth-quarter comebacks and six game-winning drives. When the pocket collapsed and the clock ticked down, he consistently found a way to deliver.

The legend exploded during the postseason. In the Wild Card round against the Green Bay Packers, Williams erased a 21-3 halftime deficit. He kept the comeback alive with a stunning fourth-and-8 bomb on the run to Rome Odunze.

A week later, against the Los Angeles Rams, facing a 4th-and-4 with the season on the line, he scrambled backward to escape three defenders before launching a prayer to Cole Kmet for a tying touchdown.

The Bears lost that Divisional Round game in overtime, but their quarterback proved he thrives when structure breaks down. He earned the right to capitalize on his late-game heroics.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office will ultimately decide who gets to print the shirts. Until then, Williams is focused on keeping his cool and gearing up for another deep playoff run.
