Some beef is cooking in the NFL, as debates are stirring about whether Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams should be nicknamed “Iceman” because analyst Skip Bayless disapproves. Nicknames go down in league history right alongside great players’ bold exploits. Understandably, those names carry sentimental value; as such, it’s important to distinguish between players.
How did Williams react to Bayless’ disapproval of his “Iceman” moniker?
Why Caleb Williams Fired Back at Skip Bayless Over the ‘Iceman’ Nickname
There’s a reason why Williams earned the nickname “Iceman” this past season. With Ben Johnson taking over as head coach in 2025, the quarterback unleashed his full potential, leading the Bears to the NFC North title for the first time in seven years.
Moreover, he powered the squad all the way to the Divisional Round, where he almost pulled off a miracle win over the high-powered LA Rams (92.3 PFSN Offense Impact).
While impressive, Chicago developed a reputation for often coming from behind to win games in key moments. As such, Williams’ clutch ability got him the “Iceman” name among fans, a nod to his ability to keep calm in tense moments.
Bayless, however, believes it’s inappropriate that Williams gets the same nickname as NBA icon George Gervin.
“I’m a Caleb Williams fan,” the analyst tweeted. “But I was a much bigger Iceman Gervin fan, and I’m offended Caleb and Co. are trying to steal George’s all-time great nickname. I unleash on today’s Arena Gridiron 2:30 E.”

Gervin spent about a decade with the San Antonio Spurs between the ’70s and ’80s, becoming famous as the “Iceman” for his style of play, demeanor, and scoring ability. His unshakeable composure under pressure and scoring efficiency stamped his name in Spurs lore.
The NBA’s “Iceman” was in town on April 9, 1978, when he balled out in the regular-season finale against the New Orleans Jazz, hanging 63 points on Elgin Baylor’s men to claim the scoring title over David Thompson.

Playing in a completely different sport, Williams believed Bayless’ allegations were unreasonable. He took to X, roasting the veteran analyst with the definition of “steal.”
“Idc about where your fandom stands,” Williams posted. “I was trying give you and everyone else the benefit of the doubt. About knowing business and being smart about it. But I guess not. Foolish of me!… Also words matter Skip Bayless… ‘Steal’… Enjoy that podcast.”

It’ll be interesting to see how Williams’ clutch ability continues to earn him the “Iceman” moniker. While fans might not prefer suspenseful late-game situations, they’ll still appreciate their quarterback’s rock-hard composure.
