With the Indianapolis Colts expected to let wide receiver Alec Pierce test free agency, one of the most intriguing names on the market is set to cash in after a long-awaited breakout season.
Despite some stretch-run upheaval at the quarterback position, Pierce recorded a career-high 47 receptions and 1,003 receiving yards over 15 games.
Alec Pierce Headlines NFL Free Agency WR Market
Pierce enters the offseason as arguably the second-best receiver set to be available, with only George Pickens, who could still be the subject of the Dallas Cowboys’ franchise tag, ranked above him.
For most of his career in Indianapolis, Pierce has been more potential than production. But in 2025, everything clicked.
With competent quarterback play and a more defined role, Pierce delivered a true breakout season and showcased why he was once considered a high-upside star in the making. Now, several teams in need of a dynamic perimeter weapon could line up for his services.
New England Patriots
The New England Patriots are closer than many expected.
After coming up just short in the 2025–26 season with a Super Bowl loss to Seattle, New England keeps building on the surprise accelerated rebuild they started last season. The offense overachieved during the regular season, but the playoffs exposed a glaring weakness: the lack of a reliable outside receiver who could bail out young superstar quarterback Drake Maye when it mattered most.
Maye made enormous strides in 2025, earning MVP votes after his breakout campaign and finishing second. Now, the Patriots are playing with house money and could afford to get hyper-aggressive in free agency to maximize their championship window.
Adding Pierce would immediately boost New England’s vertical passing attack. Pierce averaged 11.9 yards per target in 2025, second-highest in the NFL, and was one of the league’s premier downfield threats.
Pairing that explosiveness with Maye’s arm talent could take the Patriots’ offense to another level and make them an even more dangerous contender.
Buffalo Bills
An AFC East bidding war could very well unfold.
The Buffalo Bills are still searching for the final piece to get Josh Allen over the Super Bowl hump. While Buffalo has leaned heavily on tight ends Dawson Knox and Dalton Kincaid, along with running back James Cook, the lack of a true No. 1 receiver on the outside has limited the offense in key moments.
If the Bills are serious about maximizing Allen’s prime, they need a premier perimeter weapon.
Pierce finished 2025 with a PFSN NFL WR Impact Score of 84.6, ranking ninth among all receivers, and he did so in a limited role. In Indianapolis, he had to share targets with Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Tyler Warren, yet still flashed elite efficiency and big-play ability.
There’s always risk in projecting a player into a true No. 1 role. But if there’s a quarterback capable of elevating his receivers, it’s Allen. Given what he has accomplished with less-heralded wideouts in recent seasons, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Pierce reach elite production levels in Buffalo.
San Francisco 49ers
This one is both fun and quietly logical.
The San Francisco 49ers’ receiver room has thinned out quickly. Just a few seasons ago, it featured Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings, and first-round pick Ricky Pearsall.
Now, Samuel is gone to Washington, Aiyuk appears to have played his final snap in San Francisco, and Jennings enters free agency with durability concerns. Pearsall also dealt with injuries throughout 2025.
Add in the fact that tight end George Kittle suffered a torn Achilles and could miss most, if not all, of 2026, and suddenly the 49ers are in desperate need of explosive playmakers.
Pierce averaged an eye-popping 21.6 yards per catch last season, a staggering figure that would fit perfectly into Kyle Shanahan’s scheme. Shanahan has long thrived on creating explosive plays through design, and Pierce’s vertical speed would give Brock Purdy another dangerous weapon on the outside.
Even amid injuries, San Francisco posted a top-five PFSN NFL Offensive Impact Score (85.2), largely thanks to a fully healthy Christian McCaffrey returning to form. With defensive stars like Fred Warner and Nick Bosa set to return healthy as well, adding Pierce could be the move that reopens the 49ers’ championship window.
Key Dates in 2026 NFL Free Agency
The legal tampering period runs for 52 hours, opening Monday, March 9, at noon ET and closing at 3:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 11, just minutes before free agency officially begins.
During that window, teams can negotiate with the certified agents of players set to become unrestricted free agents. Verbal agreements can be reached and reported, but nothing is official yet.
For the first time, teams can recruit up to five players and speak with each for up to 1 hour via video or phone, rather than routing all contact through agents. The player’s agent must be present on every call. If a team wants to meet a player in person or have him visit a facility, that still must wait until free agency is officially underway.
Free agency officially opens at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 11, when the NFL’s new league year begins. That’s when contracts become official, not when they’re reported. The trading period also opens at that moment, allowing previously agreed-upon deals to be completed.
All teams must be cap-compliant by the 4 p.m. Wednesday deadline. The 2026 salary cap is set at $301.2 million, a $22 million increase from 2025.
Most of the market’s top players will have agreed to terms well before Wednesday afternoon. The tampering window exists to give that process structure. What’s new this year is that players themselves, not just their agents, can now hear directly from the teams pursuing them.Â
