‘He Can Handle Adversity’ – Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Addresses Tony Romo’s Future After CBS Places Him on Leave

Jerry Jones backs Tony Romo after CBS places him on leave, expressing confidence in the former Cowboys quarterback's return.

Tony Romo’s future at CBS has become one of the biggest stories around NFL media. The network announced that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is “on leave from his role at CBS until further notice” after his arrest last week for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

As questions continue to grow about what comes next, his long-term future remains under the spotlight. In these difficult times, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is publicly standing by his former quarterback.

Jerry Jones Believes Tony Romo Will Come Back Stronger From CBS Controversy

During a recent conversation with reporter Mike Doocy, Jones expressed confidence that Romo can overcome the setback and return stronger.

“I love him; I love what he’s about; I love his character; I love his love of sport, and he’s a very, very unique talent,” Jones said.

“The real question is, and I don’t even have to ask what the answer is, do you think Tony Romo knows how to get up when he gets knocked down? Yeah, he’s had a life of that, and absolutely, that’s one of his greatest attributes is that he can handle adversity. And so this is something that he will work through.”

Jones has so much faith in Romo because he has seen his character both on and off the field.

Romo spent his entire 14-year NFL career with the Cowboys after entering the league as an undrafted free agent. He eventually became the franchise’s all-time leader in touchdown passes (248) with 34,183 passing yards and 248 touchdowns.

“I’m a big fan of his, big fan of his family,” Jones added. “And let me tell you right now, he’s as real as he sounds. He feels every downtime. He feels every uptime.”

After stepping away from football, Romo joined CBS Sports as its lead color analyst and soon became one of the network’s signature voices. That success led CBS to reward him with a 10-year, $180 million contract in 2020.

But after the recent incident, Romo’s massive CBS contract has also become a talking point. He still has four years on that deal, worth roughly $72 million.

According to Mike Florio, CBS could explore a path to move on from the agreement. But ending the contract for cause instead of paying the remaining balance could create a lengthy legal dispute.

“An article from Andrew Marchand of The Athletic hints strongly at the possibility that CBS may be looking for an off-ramp from a contract that has four years and $72 million remaining,” Florio wrote in his article.

Florio noted that if CBS relies on the morals clause to end the agreement without paying the remaining salary, “the amount of money still owed would spark a massive legal fight.”

However, Florio also suggested the dispute might never reach a courtroom. If the contract contains an arbitration clause, the process would likely remain private. He also believes a negotiated settlement is the most realistic outcome if both sides decide to separate.

For now, whether CBS reinstates Romo, reaches an agreement, or attempts to terminate the contract remains an unanswered question.
