NFL Insider Adam Schefter Unpacks Jaire Alexander’s Breakup With Packers, What’s Next For the 2-Time Pro Bowler

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter weighs in on what is next for cornerback Jaire Alexander after his release from the Green Bay Packers.

Jaire Alexander’s messy release from the Green Bay Packers makes the cornerback a free agent late in the NFL offseason. He’s still on the street as many teams are holding their mandatory minicamps, and NFL insider Adam Schefter recently broke down what could be ahead for the two-time Pro Bowler

How Did Packers, Jaire Alexander Split Go Down and Where Will He Land?

Alexander was a first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft and has spent his entire seven-year career with the Packers. As a rookie, he played in 13 games with 11 starts, recording 66 tackles, 11 pass breakups, and one interception.

Green Bay picked up his fifth-year option after he was named a second-team All-Pro and made the Pro Bowl in 2020. That season, he posted 51 tackles, 13 PBU’s, and an interception.

Alexander signed a four-year, $84 million extension in the 2022 offseason, but injuries and a team-issued suspension limited him to just 14 games over the last two years. The Packers suspended him for one game in 2023 after he participated in the coin toss against the Carolina Panthers despite not being designated a captain that week.

He posted 43 tackles, 12 PBUs, and two interceptions over those two seasons and is now searching for a new NFL home. Schefter recently broke down Alexander’s situation on “The Adam Schefter Podcast” and posted on X what he thinks the cornerback’s immediate future is.

Schefter said, “The Packers were willing to offer him the most this year, but it had to be structured right. I don’t think Jaire Alexander ever felt right about that. I think he would be better off signing a one-year deal in a place that would allow him to showcase his abilities, and then hit the free agent market in 2026.”

Alexander’s cap hit was scheduled to be just under $23.5 million in 2025, and the Packers saved over $17 million by releasing him.

Schefter continued, “I’m gonna guess he’s gonna do a one-year deal. He’s gonna be in a chance where he can sign, and then once the season’s over, he’ll become a free agent and get the type of long-term deal that he’s been looking for.”

Despite the injuries, Alexander is still one of the NFL’s better cornerbacks. His release prompted a reaction from Marlon Humphrey of the Baltimore Ravens. That led Ravens fans to lobby the team to reunite Alexander and former Louisville teammate Lamar Jackson.

Alexander’s breakup with Green Bay was necessary, but not ugly. There is likely plenty left in the tank for the All-Pro, and he could use this season to dominate and land a big contract next summer.
