How Patrick Mouratoglou Rebuilt Serena Williams’ Confidence After a Career Slump

Williams struggled to find her rhythm on the Grand Slam stage before joining forces with Mouratoglou in 2012. She had gone nearly two years without a Major title and was coming off a surprising first-round loss at the French Open.

Mouratoglou saw it as an opportunity to understand her more deeply rather than to change her. A remarkable run followed: four Grand Slam titles in just two years and Olympic gold medals in singles and doubles events at the 2012 London Games.

Mouratoglou knew that guiding Williams would take more than tactical tweaks. In an interview with The Times, he revealed how he approached her as a “blank canvas,” immersing himself in interviews, analyzing old matches, and even speaking with her father, Richard Williams. He realized the key was to rebuild the same “culture of victory” Williams was raised on.

“People are complex. There is no magic,” Mouratoglou said. “Serena said to me many times, ‘You’re the person who knows me the best in the world,’ because I wanted to understand her.”

He avoided telling her what to do outright, knowing her independence was core to her identity. Instead, he learned to spot subtle emotional cues and respond in ways that helped her refocus.

“Her level of demand on herself was incredible, so much more than anyone else,” Mouratoglou added.

Patrick Mouratoglou Recalls Unusual First Encounter With Serena Williams That Sparked Grand Slam Success

Mouratoglou recalled his first encounter with Williams, calling it “weird.” What began as her search for a training spot in Paris unexpectedly led to one of tennis’ most successful partnerships. Williams had no plans to add a new coach at the time, but their instant connection changed everything.

“The way she found me was quite weird, because she was not looking for a coach, she was looking for a place to practice in Paris after her loss in the first round. She knew me just a little bit; she knew I had an academy in Paris. She called me just to get a court and two hitting partners, which I arranged,” he told Tennis Channel.

Mouratoglou said the next 45 minutes were crucial, as Williams began asking for technical guidance, signaling the start of their collaboration.

“After 45 minutes of hitting, she suddenly turned to me, who was outside the court, and said, ‘Talk to me.’ Wow. I didn’t expect it, so I talked to her. I told her the things that I was seeing, and then she said, ‘Can we work on it?'” he added.
