Serena Williams’ former coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, recently celebrated Richard Williams not just as a visionary tennis father but as the architect of his daughters’ unbreakable self-belief.
According to Mouratoglou, the key to Serena and Venus’ monumental success was the unwavering confidence their father instilled in them from day one.
Serena Williams’ Former Coach Revealed How Richard Williams Built Champions From the Inside Out
The Williams sisters’ rise from the public courts of Compton to the pinnacle of global tennis is a story often told in terms of grit, training, and raw talent. But Mouratoglou offered a more nuanced perspective. He emphasized that their father’s priority was never simply to create champions; it was to raise two young women who believed in themselves without question.
According to Mouratoglou, that foundation of confidence truly set them apart and allowed them to thrive in any path they chose.
“He told me, ‘My main focus was to create two young ladies that were believing in themselves,’” Mouratoglou recalled in an Instagram video. “Whatever they would have done, they would have been successful. We chose tennis, but if they would have wanted to be runners or singers or whatever, they would have succeeded because they had this incredible self-esteem.”
“Richard Williams didn’t just raise tennis champions, he raised two girls who believed in themselves no matter what. That belief is everything,” the video was titled.

“Why Would You Put Yourself at Risk To Fail if You Don’t Deeply Believe?” – Mouratoglou on the Role of Self-Belief in Success
Mouratoglou, who coached Serena for a decade and played a crucial role in 10 out of her 23 Grand Slam wins, explained that self-esteem is the fuel behind ambition and resilience.
“Why would you do crazy efforts, working crazy hard to achieve something you don’t really believe in?” he asked. “Why would you put yourself at risk to fail if you don’t deeply believe that at the end you’re going to make it? People don’t do it.”
The coach described that belief as a “masterpiece” engineered by Richard. This quality allowed Serena and Venus to keep pushing boundaries, whether battling top-seeded players or navigating challenges off the court.
“The core of everything that gives people the courage and the will to do what it takes to become successful starts with self-esteem,” Mouratoglou concluded.
