‘It’s a Witch Hunt Against Lane Kiffin’ — CFB World Reacts to Clemson’s Stance on LSU’s ‘Never-Ending Drama’ With NFL Players

CFB fans react after Clemson warns LSU that using former NFL players Saturday could violate the schools' game contract.

Clemson does not want LSU using former NFL players against it on Saturday. It also does not plan to boycott the game, seek damages, or take LSU to court.

That middle ground produced exactly the kind of reaction Lane Kiffin’s latest roster controversy has generated all week. Clemson formally warned LSU that using former professionals could violate the schools’ game contract, but the Tigers still intend to travel to Baton Rouge and play.

CFB World Questions Clemson’s Warning to LSU

Clemson general counsel Chip Hood notified LSU that participation by former professional players may breach contractual obligations between the schools. Yahoo Sports reported Clemson is not seeking financial damages and has not threatened legal action.

Clemson’s decisions drew reactions from many on social media, and here’s how they reacted:

“So they don’t approve. But aren’t doing anything about it?” Glen West wrote.

Everything Ole Miss treated the letter as the next escalation. “I said multiple times yesterday LSU has no idea what was coming if they expected to play those guys. Well, here you go,” the account wrote.

“And the plot thickens,” Preston Guy wrote.

JC Hoops questioned the practical effect of Clemson’s notice. “Not sure what the point of notifying LSU of this is if you’ll still play the game and not seek damages. Is it just a, ‘Hey, just FYI this is illegal, but it’s all cool’ thing?” the account wrote.

“The never-ending drama continues,” Grayson Mann wrote.

Paul Zeise reacted by writing, “This is stupid. Seriously, it is the wild Wild West out here and a bunch of self serving crack pots want to act like LSU is breaching some sort of amateurism that no longer exists.”

One user on X pushed back on criticism against Kiffin and wrote, “How come no one said this for the 5 games that Bediako played for Alabama? This ENTIRE thing only makes sense when you consider it’s a witch hunt against Lane Kiffin.”

Clemson Still Plans to Play as LSU Eligibility Fight Continues

The letter adds another layer without changing Saturday’s matchup. Clemson supports the NCAA and conference position against professionals returning to college, and Swinney said the broader situation was “embarrassing” earlier this week.

LSU, meanwhile, received a preliminary injunction Thursday that clears a path for former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to join Kiffin’s roster while the legal fight continues. The SEC separately sued LSU in federal court and maintains that its rules prohibit former professionals from returning to member programs.

There is obvious football value behind LSU’s push. Wright caught 39 passes for 635 yards and five touchdowns last season while posting an 80.6 PFN TE Impact grade, No. 20 nationally.

Whether either former NFL player actually appears against Clemson remains another question. LSU had not formally added them when Clemson sent its warning.

The schools still expect to play. The contract warning simply ensures that if LSU crosses the line Clemson believes exists, nobody can say the visiting Tigers stayed silent.
